This company which started as Coinstar keeps evolving and consolidating businesses into what is now a conglomerate.

With all the talk of streaming video and smart TVs millions of Americans still do not have cable, or care to have the latest and greatest hand held. So the habit of picking up a couple of movies at the Redbox - inside the supermarket is ingrained.

The other businesses also seem to be "Average American" friendly / easily understandable by the consumer and reliable as income streams for the company.

Nothing new to say. OUTR is facing stiffening competition to Redbox, which is most of its revenue. I had been a shareholder for a few years but I sold my shares today.

Yes, DVDs are on their way out, but it's a slow demise. They won't go with a bang, but a whimper. In the meantime, Redbox's are fairly ubiquitous and I often have to wait in line to rent. Even though the price has gone up by as much as 30-40% in recent years, rentals still cost less than $1.50, unless you forget to bring them back the next day (which I often do...) The company also does have streaming services for the same price as Netflix, though it's not advertised well and I don't think it's developed enough to the point where advertising would even be particularly good for business. The fact that you can also rent games from Redboxes makes it more than just a cheap movie rental company. Add in Coinstar, which, after taking a 9-10% fee to exchange your unwieldy coins for cash, and Outerwall is literally printing money for investors. I'll keep an eye on the company's debt and it'd be nice to see an increased focus on streaming once that platform can genuinely compete with Neflix, but as it stands today Outerwall is still a winner.

In addition to the small set of Video Providers like Netflix, Outerwall {Coinstar} not only counts coins in most Safeways, it also provides DVD movies and Games... Outerwall, pulling up the rear!!

Outerwall (formerly Redbox), which also owns Coinstar (among other brands) seems like a glorified vending machine company. Once the growth from the rollout of the vending machines is complete, the growth is finished. And this is reflected in their forecast. Furthermore the DVD market is shrinking, not growing. Either they need to manage costs to squeeze profits for operations or they need to look for new growth opportunities. I just don't see either right now.

Long. Redbox machines, New ECOatm, Rubi, Crisp Market machines and just rolled out redbox instant. Redbox tickets fail? Don’t see them on the site anymore. Strong cash flow and repurchasing shares. Extra catalyst, well over a 40% short interest.

I don't know when, but there is a point in the next 5-10 years when the wheels fall off CSTR's bus. DVD's by box are a fading model. You don't want to own a CD store in the era of iTunes. It just doesn't work ...

Coinstar's original idea of helping their customers dump their chump change is still relevant and they own that niche. While, their Redbox business is really the only viable distribution channel for physical media left. Not the bargain bin at Walmart does not count.

Redbox is the achilles heal of this company. As physical media dies so will Redbox. However, I do believe they will be there when it breathes it's last.

DVD's are still very much in use in the general public. The convenience of grabbing a dvd after pumping gas or buying groceries hasn't lost its flair. I expect this to be proven again in their 4th quarter earnings report as it was in 4th quarter 2011.

That being said, Coinstar needs to show some solid profits in the near future through their contract with Verizon for delivering movies to mobile. To stay alive and well, the company needs to continue to evolve and accept the inevitable end of days that are coming for the DVD.
