Penske Automotive Group, Inc. (PAG)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company is engaged in the sale of new and used motor vehicles and related products and services, including vehicle service, parts, collision repair, finance and lease contracts, third-party insurance products and other aftermarket products.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

on top of the fact that this stock is undervalued, I used this company to move last year and I was quite pleased with my experience.

I think lower gas prices and a change in sentiment is likely to help this stock recover nicely in the next 5-6 months. This month there were a couple of insider purchases, one for $200,000. The chart looks like a bottom in the current range. Profit margins are thin, debt looks really high, insider ownership is incredibly high and over the 50% mark. Those are all negatives in my book, but perhaps this stock has simply been beat up too much. Thirteen analysts are looking for 25% upside from yesterday's close to $18.57. PAG traded at $20 one year ago with less earnings, which increased each and every year from 1998 to 2006 but dropped a touch from 2006 to 2007. I guess that's why the stock has seen some difficult times recently. Oh, I should also mention revenues and cash flows have increased at a good clip each and every year for the past 10 years without interruption. This stock does not look dirt cheap, just merely cheap; back to $20 in six months?

Leadersship owns a lot of stock (read: 2 million shares). Leadership not accustomed to losing - (see Forbes 400, Auto Racing, Etc.). Right brands, current price victim of worries about the sector. A lot of debt, yes, but they're the sector leader. Not the biggest, but definitely the smartest.

Penske Automotive Group is the exclusive auto distributor for smartCars in North America and Puerto Rico. There is already a one year reservation wait for these in a majority of regions, the cars are the true "compact" car for urban parking, and the gas mileage is superb. As our gas prices increase, it only makes sense that people will look to a more fuel-efficient car, and starting at $11,600 with a high safety rating and 40 city/45 highway mpg, this is the ideal solution.
