This biotech company could hit it BIG, and I have been an owner of them in the past 12 months. But then they might not. Ha Ha. OK, seriously now, the problem is that Bevirimat showed excellent results when it was tested as a liquid formulation, but then when they put it in a tablet, its bioavailability was quite poor and so it did not perform well at all. For this drug to really do well commercially, it seems, based on my limited experience in biotech, that Bevirimat needs to have a tablet or capsule formulation. This may well happen, but I don't think one should expect it. At this time, my gut feeling is that chances are below 50% that they can find a tablet/capsule formulation for this drug. (But I MIGHT be wrong on this.)
So what is the bottom line? Panacos is very high risk right now, but if it looks like they've come up with a pill formulation that is working well in trials, I would seriously consider buying back into Panacos. It is a company well worth keeping an eye on in my opinion.

Trying to balance the engaing "Pot Odds" analysis (http://caps.fool.com//Blogs/ViewPost.aspx?bpid=8712&t=01003815928406778590) against the mixed phase II b trial results. Concluded that the pot odds were too favorable to pass up, and the recent Punk Ziegel Buy recommendation (http://caps.fool.com/ViewPlayer.aspx?t=01040000000000001063)

Placing a bet on continued progress of bevirimat for treatment of HIV. Stock has dipped over past 6 months, but company is managing their cash flow and picking up more favorable analyst coverage. If they can succeed with an oral delivery version of this product, then the sky is the limit. Clearly many risks ahead, but I like this one to outperform.

The hope here is that the market overreacted to problems with the oral formulation of bevirimat, and that reformulation will not prove to be too difficult. Panacos has cash for another 1-2 years of operation and is likely to pursue parterships with major companies if they cannot get a product to market in that time. They are also a fairly attractive target for acquisition by a big pharma with no major products in the pipeline.
