OLEDs are likely to be the future of the display and lighting industries, and PANL is a leader in developing and patenting the necessary technologies. It could be a big winner if OLEDs take off. However, this company is very speculative because the technology and manufacturing processes are not yet proven, and it is not known how long it will take to see successful commercial active matrix OLED products that incorporate PANLs intellectual property or chemicals.
Recs
Should start seeing products include OLEDs for the mass market very soon.

If what I read about the energy efficiency of OLED's is true, OLED based displays will become the display technology of choice for portable device mfgrs. With Samsung going on line with a dedicated OLED display factory early 2007 we have confirmation that the big boys think the technology is a winner. With so little market penetration, OLED displays could be ginormous for PANL and us little investors. My gut says that this is so big that PANL will fly against any headwind, just like NVDA did in 2001 and 2002.

Profits from actual shipments start to roll in in the spring.

A new technology looking for it's killer application. It's in a race with existing LED improvements, but will soon find it's place in the market.

Low power display technology, huge patent inventory, reasonable size R&D dept, large display market. But it will take a while to take off.
Recs
I don't see a reason to own this stock now as it continues to lose money and requires more capital to continue operations.

Dori and Nori recommended PANL to me at a speical breakfast I recently attended in the Shire. Universal Display is currently my largest holding and I think they'll do quite well. Why?? you ask.... Very succinctly, U.D. gets a cut of all oled sales from Samsung SDI. This is a technology that is right now moving from a long R&D phase into the real commercial mass production sphere. The $500 M oled facility that Samsung SDI is now building leads one to think that this is not just a shot in the dark kind of venture for them.
Recs
Commercialization of technology will start to happen.
Recs
I love the idea of organic lighting - the technology is very promising.
Recs
once we can have displays everywhere, displays will be everywhere!
Recs
Short-term bet. I won't attempt to forecast whether eventually OLEDs will prevail over other display technologies and PANL over its competitors. For now it all depends on Samsung SDI launching its AMOLED screens.

Growth sector.
Recs
I bought into it as a hopeful rule breaker, and I think it's about to hit based on the fact that the secretary in my office said to me the other day, "Have you seen these T-shirts with the LED lights?"
