Prestige Brands is a cigar-butt pick. The company owns a motley assortment of less-known consumer brands like Chloraseptic cough drops, Compound W wart remover and Comet cleaning solution. Their capital requirements are low and they are generating free cash flow. I believe the stock was punished by a branding fiasco in one of their core product lines (Compound W). The company lost some sales for a few months. However, their product lines are generally steady. It's true that Prestige is a crappy firm, but it's not $6 crappy.

Consumables seem to be the way to go, as they are the products that people need to have despite the state of the economy. In addition to making the products that people buy over and over again, this company is also into organic products as well. Organic products continue to grow in popularity, as their increased profits of these products show. Earnings beat analyst estimates, and with earning estimates up, I don't see how you can go wrong with this one. Now to see if the market agrees.

IN OUR CURRENT CREDIT CRUNCH AND RECESSED ECONOMY, MUCH OF THE POPULATION IS NERVOUS ABOUT THE FUTURE PRICING OF NECCESITIES. PRESTIGE HAS LINES OF PRODUCTS THAT HAVE A LONG SHELF LIFE AND WE ARE STARTING TO SEE MANY PEOPLE STOCKING UP ON THESE ITEMS IN FEAR THAT THEY WILL GET EVEN MORE UNAFFORDABLE. THUS FAR, THIS TREND HAS BEEN LIMITED TO UNPERISHABLE FOODS, BUT I THINK YOU WILL SOON SEE IT INCLUDE ALL PRODUCTS OF EVERYDAY LIVING. THIS WILL CERTAINLY BOOST PRESTIGE'S SHORT-TERM SALES BUT AS PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE THEIR DOLLARS STRETCH IT WILL INEVITABLY CAUSE A SLUMP AFTER THE RUN.
