Ethanol markets around the globe are suffering from the commodities squeeze. To make the situation worse, this is occurring after record years of revenue and profitability in 2013-14, so the fall seems even more precipitous. The U.S. in particular is suffering from multi-year low crop and grain prices, which is usually a great thing for ethanol producers, except when that occurs simultaneously with multi-year low petroleum prices and a saturated gasoline blending market. Oops.

Whether you like corn ethanol or not (I don't think its the best renewable fuel we could pursue), the industry has been pretty successful and is here to stay for the foreseeable future. That's good news for the long term viability of Pacific Ethanol, which gets better when you consider that the company is stupidly undervalued. There are a few other adjectives I would like to use, but let's keep this clean for the kids...

Shareholders' equity at the end of 2015 stood at $371 million. The company currently trades at a market cap of $200 million. It has over 515 million gallons of annual production capacity, notches over $1 billion in revenue every year, and is currently the fifth largest ethanol producer in the U.S. The earnings won't be there in 2016 with current selling prices and costs, but is the volatility of the ethanol industry really enough to peg this to almost half of book value? I don't think so.

Now, what may be worth trading at half of book value is the amount of debt -- $204 million at the end of 2015. Nearly $16 million in interest is due in 2016 and a staggering $160 million in combined principal and interest is due in 2017. That's a lot of money. Even in the record year of 2014 net income came in at $91 million. So I'd expect the debt to be restructured and/or to result in some significant dilution. Ideally, the acquisition of Aventine (which added more ethanol volume and some interesting high value derivative products) and more favorable market conditions in late 2016 allow the company to wrestle better terms out of financiers or sell stock at higher prices to limit the dilution. We'll see, but I'm willing to go on the record in CAPS betting for a big win in the next coming years.

Profitability is very volatile, agreed. Low oil will hurt them no doubt but in 5 years oil will be higher than today (just look at cash costs of major NA producers). Also,RINs and mandates help, and ultimately they can export the surplus where they compete with oil. This is a low debt, well managed business, and I'm essentially betting on management.
