I'm watching a group of 20 stocks that are predominately priced at or below fair value based on historic valuations. The portfolio has an above average starting yield of about 3.35% compared to the S&P 500's 1.95%. The portfolio is designed to replicate something I might choose in retirement in order to live off of dividends alone instead of share harvesting and was inspired by a series of articles by Chuck Carnevale. My goal is to not make any changes for at least 5 years unless a dividend is frozen, cut or, I see a golden opportunity that increases current income as well as offers a better than average chance at capital appreciation. The portfolio doesn't need to necessarily beat the market for me to be satisfied with it's performance but I expect it to competitive in both short and longer time horizons as well as generate a rising income stream.

See ya in 2020.

I could care less about the beverage. The potato chips are a different story.

Lays dominates a variety of markets. Selling cucumber flavor potato chips in Russia and crab flavored in China.

Workers in developing economies see many of these matter-of-fact American products as entry level luxury items.

Increased future food/drug regulations along with an increasing health organic consumer and a possible sugar tax will change the next generations views of soda and diet soda especially.

PepsiCo’s brands provide a sustainable competitive advantage. They own nine out of the top 40 packaged goods trademarks in the United States. When you combine packaged food and soft drink brands, they own nine out of the top 50 in Russia, seven out of the top 50 in Mexico, and six out of the top 50 in the United Kingdom.

Financially, we can calculate the company’s long-term debt to equity ratio to be approximately 1.00. While this cannot be considered a low amount of long-term debt, we should also consider the following: the amount of stock bought back (aka treasury stock) and the interest coverage ratio. If we remove the effect of treasury stock, we can recalculate the long-term debt to equity ratio to be a more favorable 0.53. When we consider PepsiCo’s interest coverage, we find its operating profit to be 10.65 times its interest expense. This means that they need less than 10% of their operating profit to service their current amount of debt. Given these mitigating factors, I find the debt level acceptable. Note: I found the following website helpful when thinking about PepsiCo’s debt – http://www.wikihow.com/Analyze-Debt-to-Equity-Ratio.

At the end of the calendar year of 2013, the company had $9.4 billion dollars in the bank (up from $6.3 billion at the end of the calendar year of 2012). In addition, free cash flows have been strong and growing – $7.0 billion, $5.9 billion, and $5.7 billion for 2013, 2012, and 2011, respectively.

Finally, the company has strong and seasoned management. In fact, the top twelve executives possess over 200 years of experience in the consumer packaged goods industry – an average of nearly 17 years per manager.

Based on the following factors: 1) a sustainable competitive advantage, 2) cash aplenty, and 3) strong leadership, I believe PepsiCo will outperform the market over the next five plus years.

Note: All the information above can be found in the company’s 2013 annual report, which they have posted on their investor relations website.

As we begin to learn about the health effects we will consume less of Pepsi's products. They are too large to quickly adapt to the changing market and will lose economies of scale.

Second only to KO in the slowing soft drink industry, PEP also has a strong and growing snack brand in Frito-Lays.

Besides being number 2 in the soda oligarchy it owns great brands like Gatorade and Frito-Lay. I think those who would split the company up are mistaken.
