PFF Bancorp, Inc. (PFB)

CAPS Rating:
**

A diversified financial services Company that conducts its business principally through its wholly-owned subsidiary, PFF Bank & Trust, an institution, and full service banking branch offices.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

1.- Old bank, with very consistent performance record. Financially sound, dividend stable despite loan crisis in the financial sector.

2.- Excellent management. I've seen interviews with the top two officers and have done extensive research on the performance records.

This is a company that seems to be doomed. DOOMED, do you hear? Why?

First, consider that, over the past three years, their revenue has grown measureably. However, their assets/cash has not increased.

In addition, return on assets is a mere 1%!!

So, why do I think t...More

In anticipation of the eventual rebound of the financial sector. A little early for bottom feeding, but I am just indiscriminately putting all stocks that are tagged S&L.

Not sure what's going on here. Big provision, cancel dividends but price is up a ways. Somebody getting ready for takeover?

1.- Old bank, with very consistent performance record. Financially sound, dividend stable despite loan crisis in the financial sector.

2.- Excellent management. I've seen interviews with the top two officers and have done extensive research on the performance records.

3.- Not involved in sub-prime loans. Loss related to the ripple affect, depressing real estate prices in their market.

4.- Their market area is in a long-term rapid growth phase, and the opportunity is expanding. The conditions slowing it now are temporary.

This is (a)a sound bank with (b)top management, in a position to (c)take advantage of booming growth in their market.(d) It's PPS has been disproportionately depressed by sector problems. Those are the earmarks of a real bargain- and three billionaire investors have recognized that, recently acquiring very large positions.

Prior to the sub-prime crisis, the average PPS has been above $25 for 3 years, with the 52 wk high being $35.76. It's rate of recovery will depend in part on the sector recovery rate. I expect the 12-month PPS to be $22-28, the 24 month to be $28-40.

The bank is also a take-over target, with one attempt active now. Banks typically sell at 2-3 times TBV, which would make the price of PFB $31 to $45.
