Duke merger

What? How can a stock with a long stable dividend history currently yielding over 5% underperform? It will because there will be no stock price appreciation. And 5% isn't good enough to beat S&P500 going forward.
On a risk adjusted basis, this one will have better return. But CAPS is not about risk adjusted return. If the stock underperforms S&P500 on total return basis, an underpeform call earns points. And I think over next 5-10 years, S&P500 will outperform this stock hands down, no question!

High yield strategy: TMFHighYield says to look for "high dividend payers from the S&P 500 from diverse sectors, relatively low debt, and a history of increasing dividend payments." This is my utilities pick.

I think electric consumption will continue to expand.

Good dividend. Good yield. Reasonable P/E. I like it.

I bought an entry at $40+ but so far it have dropped steadily, especially after the glitch of May. I expect from here to X-mas, things would not get much better. The lo-hi range is not very wide, commonly observed in utility stocks.

utilities are safe stocks again

It 's used for so much, electricity, more and more things are made that use it,ie electric cars, electric scooters for the ageing baby boomers, this is a real company, with real value, turn off your main breaker and see how long before you turn it back on,pgn is in a great growth area, the 6 percent div a yr. is better return than S&p for the last few yrs.

I don't see Progress Energy outperforming the stock market (S&P 500 or the DJIA) in near future I do like the stock for the dividend, however.

Dividend play. Goal $40 a share + dividends

With recovery oil prices can do nothing but go up as the chinese and others try to take control of oil ( look at the takeover of HTE by the Koreans) A strong company with good dividends.

A great investment yeilding a nice dividend. Just got approval from Florida to build new Nuclear site. It's time for green engery.
I just wish that CEO ownership of stock was higher, it would put more confidence in overall stock value.

The south will rise again

This will be the first energy company to get back into nuclear reactor generation. As the cost of fossil fuels rises in the future, the cost of nuclear generation should decline.

Green is in. With a focus on alt-energy for the current administration, and likely (attempted) changes in infrastructure this company will probably have a high demand for its services. But uhdunno, I'm just getting started, and think that that sounds good.

I have owned this stock for years, and it almost always hovers in the low to mid $40s. It is only suffering the effects of the recession. The dividends are good, making it a reliable pick in an overall bear market.

PGN is an electric utility in a growing area, with good earnings growth and some sales growth. In this economy that is success.
Recs
Progress is a solid utility with a good yield. Also, a recent rate increase authorized in North Carolina should boost earnings.
