At a PE that would have been considered an outrage not all that long ago, investors are apparently concerned that earnings growth will stall out and stay relatively flat to slightly up for 2009. Add to that the fact that PKI was hammered down by a negative forecast a few days ago from Waters Corp (not an apples to apples comparison) and consider PKI's basing and contra move up today in a decidedly down market on above average volume, and it's reasonable to conclude that PKI has put in a bottom and will move higher from here. The market assumes that the outlook for PKI has dropped in line with forecasts for its peers. Having discounted that bad news (which may or may not apply), the outlook for price appreciation appears to be very good.

Perkin Elmer has always been a respected supplier of laboratory equipment. They also operate in the biotechnology supply industry. The partnership announced with Cerep, a company that provides preclinical assay services, is a nice step up laboratory supply chain to adding additional biotech / pharma services and assays. I like it. PKI does not look particularly expensive right now on a historical basis - so time to be bullish.

Consistent growth. Reminiscent of ruler stocks of 80's.

They are building a portfolio of strong offerings in their industry and they are being smart about it. Let's hope they don't get tempted to cut any corners in getting products approved.
