As a utility worker, I can tell you that there is a vast need for new generation (which requires new transmission to get the energy to the load = good for PLPC) and maintenance on the already existing distribution lines (distribution is the smaller wooden poles you see in residential areas compared to large metal towers that carry the transmission lines).

Preformed Line Products Company (PLPC) is an international designer and manufacturer of products and systems employed in the construction and maintenance of networks for the energy, telecommunication, and cable operators. The company’s domestic market chips in 55% of its revenue, while the rest is put up by foreign markets.

PLPC has a strong presence in international markets and the quality products offered by the company strengthen its market share. Moreover, there is an increase in investment in the energy markets due to the requirements of the 2005 Energy Policy Act. The company’s adherence to service over price and enhanced product offering in both transmission and distribution will enable it to harness this increase in investment. It is anticipated that the company’s foreign energy markets will also continue to expand as new transmission and distribution projects are announced.

The formed wire products and the protective closures contribute about 80% of PLPC’s revenues. Moreover, the deployment of new access networks and improvements to the existing ones will continue to add momentum to the company’s top-line. Furthermore, the increased demand for high-speed communication services and increased bandwidth in data communication services will positively affect the demand for the company’s products.

Moreover, PLPC’s operating margin and net profit margin for the period 2001-2006 were significantly higher than the industry averages. The company’s favorable growth prospects justify its higher operating margins and returns in the foreign markets. Therefore, considering the company’s under levered balance sheet, and its strength in technology and manufacturing expertise, it is believed that PLPC will be the vanguard of the industry in future.

I would have included this one at a cheaper price, but it was too small for CAPS rules.

Preformed Line is a 60 year old business in a boring established industry that is over 50% owned by insiders. It is also a very small cap stock and fairly illiquid. The institutions who have found it are a solid group and for the most part it cruises under Wall Street's radar. They are poised to benefit from three trends:

1.) The impending upgrade of the power transmission infrastructure in the US spurred on in part by the new Energy Bill.
2.) The continued expansion of power and communications grids in the emerging economies.
3.) Fiber to the Premise buildout of broadband in the US.

For a small company, PLPC has a well established global presence and stands to benefit from all three trends. In some areas they have little competition. In others they have a solid IP portfolio. Slow, steady grower that should reward the patient investor.

Thinly traded and fairly volitile, this one is more suited to CAPS than a real life port. PLPC is an international designer and manufacturer of products and systems employed in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground networks for the energy, communications, cable operators, information and other similar industries. The Company's primary products support, protect, connect, terminate and secure cables and wires. They also manufacture a line of products serving the voice and data transmission markets. Products include, Formed Wire and Related Hardware Products, Protective Closures, Plastic Products, Data Communication Interconnection Devices and other Products. Nationally and internationally, they market their products through a direct sales force and manufacturer's representatives. They stand to benefit from buildout of "the last mile" fiber optics to the home. They are currently at a 52 week low.
