Plug Power, Inc., formed as a joint venture between Edison Development Corporation (EDC) and Mechanical Technology, is a development stage enterprise involved in the design, development, and manufacture of on-site energy systems for energy consumers worldwide.
The company’s current commercial offerings consist of GenCore, a backup power product targeting telecommunication, broadband, utility, and industrial uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications. To strengthen its base, the company has initiated development of new products, which includes a continuous power product with optional combined heat and power (CHP) capability, targeting remote commercial and residential applications.
In the long run, it is believed that fuel cell customers will be focusing on price, compared to incumbent technologies. Subsequently, competitive initial costs and lower variable operating costs as against batteries or the power grid will be an essential aspect for mass-market acceptance. Discounting the same, Plug Power is targeting early premium power markets that rely on lead acid batteries initially, but later on may switch over to fuel cells usage, owing to lower costs.
Strategically moving, Plug Power is teamed with General Electric, Detroit Edison, Honda, and Tyco, each of which has distribution agreements in place for Plug Power products and provides benefits in component sourcing and purchasing, marketing, and R&D. Furthermore, the company recently introduced the first commercially viable fuel cell for backup power to wireline, wireless, and cable markets, with a longer-term view to material handling and other premium markets.
Considering the development-stage nature of the business, the company has been incurring losses for quite sometime now. Nevertheless, cash sustainable position and new orders affirm improved financial performance for the company. Adding to the delight, the recently announced investment from Smart Hydrogen will help the company to draw bullish responses in future.

Without profits, this company is destined to die on the vine.
Fuel cell technology depends on a cheap supply of hydrogen and a hydrogen distribution system. Neither of these things exist today, or are likely to exist soon. The home hydrogen reformers that PLUG is developing operate from natural gas, which is expensive and subject to large price spikes. The present natural gas distribution system could never support widespread use of this technology, nor does sufficient natural gas production presently exist.
For the foreseeable future, fuel cells will remain a nitch product.

In conjunction with Honda, the PLUG home energy system is exactly what the worls needs.Plug's initiatives in reliable back up power for telecom is amazing !

There are two areas where I feel fuel cells will emerge on their own. One is to replace generators for emergency backup for power on the grid (hospitals, factories, telephone switching stations, etc...) The other is in portable devices as they either replace batteries or can supply more power than batteries or generators for their weight. (The military is a candidate who might need a portable, quiet, low heat emitting, dependable source of power)
