Panera Bread Company (PNRA)

CAPS Rating:
**

Company deals in meeting consumer dining needs by providing high quality food, including fresh baked goods, made-to-order sandwiches on freshly baked breads, soups, salads, custom roasted coffees, and other cafe beverages.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Strong financials, they got pounded with the astronomical jump in wheat prices which destroyed margins. Managment is committed to improving margins, and has always been effective in the past when focused. They have posted good growth numbers consistently and still has lots to go. Oh that is sooo frustrating---I just spent about 40 minutes writing a detailed pitch as to why I think Panera is WAY overextended at current levels and something happened with CAPS and it didn't register.

The skinny of the pitch is this:

Panera is a great company with a fantastic business model (m...More

Freshly baked bread = Fuel costs to deliver every day (up to 300 miles from the dough facility) + product waste + high prices (when consumers are cutting discretionary spending) = BAD!

Higher prices for consumers and higher costs for the company are never a good thing in combination. The company is definitely overestimating its ability to keep foot traffic high given the current economic conditions.

P/E of 26 is too high for an average food concept like Panera. They have expanded aggressively of late and are therefore locked into high rent leases for the next few years, which will impact earnings.

Seems overextended at these prices.

Top fools show recent short interest here. S&P gives it 1 measly star and their DCF calc puts this baby in the mid-30s within a year.
