Panera Bread Company is a well managed growing casual sit-down-style and take-out, mid-level dining establishment popular in areas where it is established. Dining is generally flexible and affordable with good to excellent quality customer service.

At the current price, these shares represent a reasonable entry price for growth oriented long-term investors.

Panera offers good value food but, more importantly, offers healthy food. This is an ethical investment given that obesity and related conditions are the #1 public health concern. Companies that peddle unhealthy food are unethical and are not riding the wave of the future.

When it comes to quick service and healthy options Panera Bread is in a league of their own. I wish they would open locations in Quebec.

Panera has grown sales at 15% and earnings at 25% for the past five years. Returns on equity have averaged 19% and returns on capital have been 19%. Earnings are projected by analysts to grow at 17% for the next five years.

To value Panera, I start with 2013 projected earnings of $6.69, grow them at 17% for five years, then at 15% for five years. I end up with $29.50 in earnings in 10 years. Assuming a P/E of 30 at that time, I get a share price of $885. Discount that back at 15% and I get a value of $220 or so. At $175 or so, that's a decent enough discount on a company that can likely grow faster than projected.

Had a nice drop yesterday, so might be a decent buy. P/E is pretty reasonable for a growing company, and it certainly passes the anecdote test -- it's packed every time I go by. When your company's problem is figuring out how to serve the throngs of people that want your stuff, that's a problem, but a good problem.

Opportunity to diversify and spin off new concepts from basic model, plus quality and value, gives PNRA room to grow.

Strong company at its core, whose price has recently taken an overly aggressive downturn.

- Undervalued compared to its peers.

- Low PEG ratio.

- This company is growing like crazy and investors are giving it a multiple similar to KFC (YUM) and McDonalds (MCD).

In a couple years...$9 in earnings x 30 PE ratio gives us a $270 stock price for a company with almost no debt!

- The only small negative news that I read in their last report to investors is that customers counts declined 0.5% (maybe because very small price increases gave some people the impression that Panera food is expensive).

In the ultra competitive mid-priced restauarnt market, is anyone ever trying to wrest this segment away from Panera? Great margins, great loyalty, far from saturation, Panera should keep rolling for years.

Growing like crazy, these folks are where CMG was four years ago.... Four years ago when I sold CMG and made a nice profit...and MISSED OUT A HUGE PROFIT!!! I won't make that mistake again with Panera.
