I've had this pick for over 5 years. steady, growing dividend. PA electrical deregulation should give earnings and dividends a kick up.

PPL has fallen from mid $30's to $29+ and now its a buy as
Co sees FY09 $1.60-1.90 vs $1.78 First Call consensus and sees FY10 $3.10-3.50 vs $3.37 First Call consensus.

2009 earnings will be lackluster as PPL works through some tough economic times. The company has lowered costs by downsizing the workforce by 200 people and discontinuing expensive alternative energy builds. Those cost reductions
will allow PPL to post mediocre numbers in 2009. In 2010 earnings are projected to DOUBLE thanks to the removal of rate caps and completion of a new energy delivery line which will allow PPL to sell power into a much bigger market.

I wouldn't expect wonders in the short-term from this utility but this may be the best time to pick up the stock cheap before it starts ramping up to account for the 2010 earnings jump.

Rate caps in PA expire 1/1/10, and earnings will double from current levels.

Super cheap, and major catalysts in the upcoming 2010 rate hikes and rise in the ratio of off-peak to peak hours (off-peak are sold at a much higher margin). They have strong hedges in place for coal and natural gas price jumps, and, my favourite, they are a great nuclear and hydro play (Already have over 2000mw of nuclear capacity, and have submitted plans for a new joint facility with Areva)

I see this stock going sky high when natural gas comes more into focus. Once their rate hike goes through and their new lines are installed. More big things to come.

They are planning to invest in new nuclear plants. I don't believe that is likely to be a profitable or popular decision.
