Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc. (PRAA)

CAPS Rating:
*****

A full-service provider of outsourced receivables management and related services. The Company's primary business is the purchase, collection and management of portfolios of defaulted consumer receivables.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

How many people do you know are credit card or automobile debt free? How many do you think will not be able to pay their debt by the end of 2008 or 2009? I am positive the credit card debt has some linkage to the recent “sub-prime meltdown syndrome”.

Putting my mouth where my money is. I just bought it, so I might as well rate it. Current valuation looks good to me based on long-term growth potential.

It will take that much time.....if they stick to their guns and have enough liquidity to manouver thru this trying period .....they would be making money hand over fists in 2010+

It is picking up a portfolio of collectable loans that should help it grow into the future even though its fundamentals don't look all that good right now.

Finally, a "Hidden Gems" pick to write home about! I missed the recent run-up in CAPS after a positive earnings report - but not in my real life portfolio. I've bought these guys over the past year at all points - $50, $40, $30. I don't see how the company can fail, given their successful track record of collecting debt that they buy for pennies on the dollar. Kudos to the subprime mess for tanking PRAA for a bit; I didn't miss the opportunity to get in cheap! Long term hold.
