Prudential Financial, Inc. (PRU)

CAPS Rating:
**

A financial services Company that has operations in the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America. It offers an array of financial products and services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Thank you to luvb2b...

You'd think after a 50% decline from their highs that valuations would be appealing... I value companies before I value their shares. I did similar research onto AIG before, but thanks to luvb2b I've found this to be even more grand. You think this is still a good ...More

Prudential will outgain it's own partners. Reconigtion is beyond my doubt. What it will turn out is the question left unanswered.

Prudential Financial will survive the 2008 "financial's are the devil's work" syndrom. Still, I'm thinking that "Pru's" numbers will be flat, into the 2nd half of 2009.

Pru results : Facts

Pru did not beat estimates.

Pru reported net income for the second quarter of $1.35 per share, sharply lower than $1.80 reported in the corresponding quarter last year. The mean estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters was for a per-share profit of $1.85.

There was a great confusion with the “adjusted operating income”. Pru also reports what they call “adjusted operating income”. Adjusted operating income is a non-GAAP measure of performance that excludes net realized investment gains/losses. This is the result if there had been no subprime crisis. This is great creative accounting.

Pru results do not include some unrealized gains/losses. Net unrealized losses on general account fixed maturity investments of the Financial Services Businesses amounted to $1.718 billion at June 30, 2008, compared to net unrealized gains of $1.332 billion at December 31, 2007.

I am not sure that all journalists and all investors have understood all this
