Everything in the world runs on power and the type of power is never right, you AC when you need DC, DC when you need AC, high voltage when you need low, etc... Power-One makes the most efficient power converters out there, it's not just an "alt energy" play, they can save power on every device, every server farm, every house, (again) etc... Steep discount as people only see the solar side, nowhere to go but up.

Good fundamentals. Room to improve sales with Solar companies looking for competitive price on inverters.

I think the price has been beaten down and the long term potential is good. Time to nibble in with some real money also.

In @ $5.13.

There's been a lot of focus on Fool about their competitor Enphase's microinverters. It's important to note that microinverters and power-optimizers (similar functionality) will only comprise about 10% of the entire inverter market BY 2016. Enphase will likely get the biggest share of that, followed by SolarEdge.

Who gets the rest?

SMA is still #1 in inverters.
PWER is now #2.

PWER also offers a micro inverter product so it should be able to compete within its existing channels.

I work in this industry and I prefer using PWER to SMA for most residential designs. Their MPPT technology allows for uneven stringing of panels, with small and flexible string sizes available because there's such a wide voltage range.

For example, imagine the home has South, West, and Southwest roofs available. Two of the planes can fit 8 modules and one can fit 7.

With PWER could have 3 strings with 7, 8, 8 all at different azimuths. An SMA system would have to have 3 strings of 7.

This added flexibility, IMO, pretty much erodes the advantage of microinverters. Uneven stringing makes maximizing the space on a roof easy.

The reason you'd want microinverters on a residential system would be to achieve either smaller string sizes or to mitigate shade. Now, practically speaking, for ease of installation and design best practices, you don't want to throw 2 modules here, two modules there, on a residential roof. Basically, if you can't fit enough panels within the extra flexibility parameters provided by a PWER inverter (as few as 4 modules), the mounting plane probably isn't well suited for solar. No inverter, whether micro or centralized, or optimized will make a solar panel produce in the shade. You need a chainsaw for that. If the system is well designed and the site well suited for solar there's no benefit to using mircoinverters.

What else is to like?

-Great balance sheet- $2 per share in cash and no debt.
-Growth worries priced in
-Good profitability metrics for the industry
-Great FCF yield, low PE

I think it's mispriced currently.

For those unfamiliar with this company, they sell power inverters for solar and wind generators. I believe solar will have a sunny future so they should make some money and grow but be prepared for some headwind because competition is coming.

The inverter market is growing and so will Power-One. It has a high ROI and ROE and little debt. Once good news hits, it will skyrocket.
