Quantum Corp (NYSE:QTM)

The excellent activist investor Starboard Value just established a position in Quantum. This company is right up its alley. Starboard often looks to straighten out companies that have strong core businesses that generate excellent cash flow but squander their core business' earnings on unsuccessful attempts to expand or just have plain old inefficient operations. This is a bet that Starboard will straighten Quantum out.

Two reasons to buy: 1. The price is too low, 2. They are a nice takeover target. I bought this last year and doubled my money. I sold it and now I plan to repeat that process this year, or when the market starts its recovery.

QTM will be the next data storage company to be acquired. I see this stock easily getting a $6/share bid in the coming months.

Data storage stocks will outperform in 2011.

A year ago this stock was selling for $0.84. At that time they had already done what other companies had done. They put in a new manangement team that reorganized the company for efficiency and made the cost cutting steps necessary. In addition they refocused their business for the future. So far so good. They are in a great area. Data storage. Just look at all the other companies in this area and look at the growing demand for data storage given today's uses of technology. Their current stock price just illustrates the positive direction this company is headed.

Storage market continues to grow. OCZ, STEC, and QTM are poised to profit, IMO.

It dropped to far. The market for their products are very good. They have just come out with new products and they letting there old ones go. There is now confidence in there new products and a new strategy on marketing will make sales rise significantly

1. Demand for storage doubles every 18 months
2. the CEO is the former Pres of Microsoft

Quantum is a like a sleeper cell. Its right there in plain sight and yet it gets little stock market attention, while being poised to blast it's way onto the the forefront after its next quarterly report in February 2010.

I think they will get bought this year

Never go without tape backup...this will prevail for some years at least.

They realized, that tape is dead, and went to disk-based VTLs (virtual tape libraries).
But VTLs are just a temporary phaenomenon - like in the early 90s disk-compression (stacker/doublespace) was.
It's just a question of 1-2 years, when disks are large enough (3-5 TB per drive) to not require such products as workarounds.
AND the natural place for such technologies is actually the drive itself.
So if Seagate/WDC accidentally does it ... good luck.
Another significant negative factor is the CEO.

Will finally begin to exploit data dedupe,
but their installed base/mass of products will
retard them in the long run. So, next quarter
may be good, but after that ...

QTM is gonna do nice in the longer term... everyone needs good data storage and management no business can get by without!

I think they are at a floor at $2.24. We'll see. Upside potential looks good, so I'm willing to speculate that DSS will move higher, faster than the S&P500.
