According to a Morningstar article (12/08), Rogers is the only company using the "Global System for Mobile" communications (GSM) wireless standard within Canada. Because GSM is the dominant standard worldwide, it enables its customers to more easily roam internationally. This means that Rogers is the only Canadian company selling the Apple iPhone.
While the incremental iPhone promotion and subsidy expenses will hurt margins over the near term, improved "Average Revenue Per User" (ARPU) and increased customer loyalty should foster sustained long-term profit growth.

RCI is a leader in the Canadian telecom industry. They continue to invest significantly in their systems, and the results have proven management's ability.
This one is down big today (7/29/08), even though earnings beat expectations, and they posted double digit growth. I think it's been hit too hard (apparently over anticipated increased subscriber costs associated with the iphone).
Margins may take a slight hit, but I'll take my chances with a strong operator with a history of consistent growth.

A company with great management, competing in a wireless market that only has about 60% penetration. They manage the only GSM network in Canada and are poised for strong growth for the next couple of years, until new entrants enter the Canadian wireless industry.

The Canadian wireless and cable markets are experiencing the growth the US market experienced over the past couple of years. US market is slowing while the Canadian market is accelerating. This appears to be a play with limited downside and plenty of upside.

The telecom companies in Canada are seen as potential buyout candidates. BCE is currently being bid for by at least two groups. Rogers Communications is well positioned in the Canadian market and has demonstrated its potential over the past year or so. They have recently announced the acquisition of a strong chain of radio stations. RG will continue to out perform the S&P.
