Everest Re Group, LTD currently qualifies for my Stable Dividends screen, which has outperformed the S&P 500 by 16.6% per year since January 1, 2000. After posting a small loss in 2008, Everest Re is expected to finish 2009 with $12.56 per share in earnings and analysts expect the company to earn $11.96 per share in 2010. The company's balance sheet is sound. Despite all of this positive news, Everest Re is trading below its historical valuations. Current p/bv: 0.85. Five year median p/bv: 1.17. Combined ratio below 90% for previous quarter and six month periods. Relatively quiet hurricane season so far. Insurance is cyclical and coming out of a rough market with significant competition. Once the johnny-come-lately's are thinned due to mis-pricing risk the sector will pick up. Someone posted Buffett is bearish on the sector- Buffett does not issue market calls.
