+ Watch RLD
on My Watchlist
3d movies are making strong revenues, breaking previous records in strides. A whole slew of good ones to hit the screens this Summer. Man of Steel for one. RealD seems to have this cornered.
RLD is a fad with a very finite shelf life. They have no new innovation. About 70 % of their gross comes from overseas and that will fade as well once china and russia move onto the next new thing. The company's own buy back is manipulating the stock price higher - nothing justifies the high P/E. with this, losses, over priced officers and no dividends why would this company ever increase substantially. Imax much better value.
Invests ~ $10,000 in equipment to upgrade each screen for 3D capability. Theater pays $0.50 per movie ticket back to RLD. (while charging $2~$5 to the customer)Payback is within 16 months. Current stock value does not even capture the profit projected from the EXISTING number of screens. All future expansion business (including internationally) is free.
3D TV without glasses will be the future of television
My first CAPs (I am a newbie to investing), so be nice!!I have been looking into RLD for a few days now, trying to educate myself on their business model and how they have been doing. I read the prior posts on IMAX vs RLD, and I have to say I disagree. I won't get into the differences and pros/cons of each (you can do your own reading of those Fool articles). RealD 3D has been contracting more and more installs domestically and abroad. There are more 3D movies coming out every year and RealD 3d gets a lic fee of ~4.5% of RLD3D gross sales. It does not take a math wizard to see that more theatres + more 3d movies made = more lic profits. Just my two cents, I am not a day trader and do not have a business degree, I am simply a Dentist who loves movies!!! Oh, and RLD is up over 30%ytd
EC says great product from a company that's just taking off, with a clean balance sheet
3D sucks. The worst part is that they charge you more for a crappier product. If I am going to shell out $$$, it will be on IMAX, preferably non 3D.
The fact that RealD will have over 25,000 3D screens worldwide, showing 35 films a year at an average of $.50 per viewing times 1 Billion customers worldwide, is a rather convincing stat. The fact that RealD owns the equipment, has long term contracts in place for said equipment is another factor. I believe RealD has positioned itself to dominate the 3D market for years to come. Numbers,Technology, and Product equals SUCCE$$.
3D has been a fad that has been falling in and out of fashion for decades. They rode the wave up, but now with Pirates and Kung Fu Panda 2 showing weak demand for 3D maybe studios will think twice before converting nearly every movie into 3D. I know I drove 15 minutes past the closest movie theater just to see Thor in 2D, and the 4 people we went with agreed that it was worth the drive to avoid the 3D. Lookout for the dropping share of box office receipts from 3D. Panda and Pirates had about 65% of their showings in 3D theaters that only had about 35% of the attendance. Those are scary figures
They are done installing. Now they get to watch the royalties come on in. 3D is not going away
Stock with huge growth potential. Many people will try to tell you that 3D is a fad. Some say it's ruining the artistic integrity of film. Wrong. Much like when sound first came to film, there was a string of initial backlash. Critics agreed that sound for films wouldn't last and that it ruined the cinema! How wrong were they. 3D is just another tool to help enhance the film experience. There will always be 2D movies I'm sure, but the more 3D we get, especially good 3D, there more people are going to feel like the normal 2D is missing something. When you have directors like James Cameron, George Lucas, and Peter Jackson saying 3D is the future of movies, that's not an overstatement. With the developing world finally being able to afford the movie experience box office will only grow. In the near future the North American box office isn't going to matter as much, even if earnings decline, they will soar internationally. Maybe Americans have gotten so used to luxury they forget what its like to not have a theater, Mcdonalds, and Walmart on every corner. Many movies are already starting to gross over 50% of their box office internationally, don't underestimate the international market, they are the future whether you like it or not.
WE NEED THIS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? WAIT WATCH AND SEE !
Current losses can be attributed to the exhibitor-owned options which count as expenses. However, that expense is not an on-going expense, and RealD will be profitable, most likely in the next two quarters.Consumer brand awareness of RealD is increasing, as they are making a play in the consumer electronics space - partly through the licensing of their eyewear/display technology, and partly through the licensing of their 3D format.
Studios will need something new to bring in the viewer as many can get as good an experience by sitting home in their home theatre lounge. Or the technology could be used by Netflix to offer something the viewer cant get at the theatre, 3d movies at home by internet.
IMAX or Real D, seems like most movie producers, 3d home television makers and video games are turning to Real D. $0.33 eps expected next year. Buy for the market technicals in the short term, valuation is improving for long term horizons. Open interest in calls at $30 and little to no put positions confirms bullish trend in near term. Classic cup with handle formed mid November. IBD is now following even with less than spectacular volume.
Because Deej said so. Also 3D, smell-o-vision, pick your own ending, electrically shock the patron and other ideas have come and gone as fads. Only things that added to everyone's experience such as sound, surround sound, color and clearer picture have stayed and thrived. This version of 3D can't be used by everyone and may leave many of those who can use the tech with problems if they use it for extended periods of time. Hardly a broad based solution.
Helped make Avatar. Enough said. 3D gaming will be huge and RLD will be a major player. Great buyout candidate for Sony/Samsung. Eventually laptops, TV, and game consoles will all be in 3D. Very similar to the evolution from black and white to color.
bout this stock today, i think 3-d is the future in movies, and i've been to several movies that used RealD and can say that i enjoyed the experiance. has alot of room for growth
