Republic Services, Inc. (RSG)

CAPS Rating:
*****

Provider of non-hazardous solid waste collection and disposal services in the United States.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Republic Services Inc. is a provider of solid waste curb side collection, recycling and landfill management. The performance for much of this year has been above the S&P and through continual aquisition and expansion through the states, I expect the trend to continue. The profit margin is single dig...More

Allied Waste is the better way to invest in this in reality. Unfortunately, it cannot be done the same way in CAPS due to the rules. Allied Waste has received an offer to be purchased by Republic Services. .45 shares of common stock would be given for every share of AW common stock. The AW market price has fluctuated, but it's generally trading around $11/share as of late. Assuming the deal goes through (which I think is very likely), you can obtain a cost basis of RSG at $24.45/share by buying AW @$11/share before the deal goes through. The competitive characteristics of these two businesses when combined should give Waste Management some serious competition as RSG should join the heavy weight ranks in this industry. I think Waste Management agrees, and has made buyout offers to RSG of $35/share and $37/share in recent months as an attempt to break up the deal. Knowing that WMI has made a $37/share offer to prevent the combination of AW and RSG implies that there is a lot of value there. Even if you assume that the overall profitability for WMI may be less than expected in a WMI/RSG merger scenario, I've got to imagine that is still baked in when you are talking about a 50% price difference ($37/$24.45 = 51%) between buyout offer and how part of the market is valuing RSG now (via AW). Part of that discount is likely due to the market's doubt about this AW/RSG deal happening. This deal has a high likelihood of going through, even with the current (credit) market turbulence. RSG is decently attractive by buying the RSG stock in the open market, but AW is definitely the way I'd go on this one...
