With the prospect of mergers and growth of needed services this appears to be a safe play for a short(2-4 year) term.

RSG is a waste managment compnay that so far has been managed very well. The company has nice margins, and pays a decent divided. I really a couple of other things here and that is the waste managment buisness is a high barrier to entry to do permits and regulations, and also the company has been very investor friendly so far, with nice growth, and the repurchase or stock. However they just announced plans for a merger with AW. AW is a much larger a poorly run company. If RSG is able to unite these companies and maintain the RSG buisness modle and culture this could be a great stock

Republic Services is a financially sound company poised for growth. For Q1 FY08, the company posted increased revenue and increased net income. It continued its trend of increasing returns for shareholders, authorizing a share buyback in Feb 08.
The trash industry is a high growth industry. Republic Services has a good foothold and is well positioned for future growth. The bottom line, with its history of sound financial practices and good returns to investors, this trash company is a treasure.

The tremendous growth thus seen in the waste management sector is going nowhere even in the face of a recession this summer. Bill Gates sure called this sector a few years ago when he invested gobs of money into it becuase he saw an oppertunity. Well, folks that oppertunity is still there, and I see this entire sector continuing up. The laughable P/E of all of these companies will soon disappear. Time to jump on board if you haven't already.

Once we stop producing so much trash, I'll reconsider this stock's future. In the mean time...

Superior business model and geographic advantage creates a sustainable "moat" that will allow for stable free cash and dividend increases. HIghest ROIC in the industry due to young landfills and franchise model.

Bullish on recyclers. Tracking this competitor to a fav. company of mine, Metalico (MEA)

This is nearly a recession proof stock. They own their own land, they have monopoly status in much of the SW, long term government contracts, pay a bit of a dividend, and are near their PE low.
I expect long term it will not necessarily beat the larger market, but in the short term I think it's quite safe.
Recs
Solid management making carefully planned moves to capture market share from tough competition.

We as a society are (slowly) becoming more aware of waste in the environment. This company has a fair business record and is in a good position to profit from its metropolitain locations.

Bill Gates owns this one ANDm it has dividends

Company is expanding and locking down long-term muni contracts. The CEO is solid in this industry and one of the major investors in this company is Bill Gates. Need I say more?
Recs
RSG has a monopoly in 40% of its markets; small dividend; most efficient waste company

RSG reported another solid quarter, with 4Q06 EPS of $0.51 up 21%.
Free cash flow is forecast at $315 million.
RSG has also bought back ~4.5% of shares.
The prospects for consistent double digit EPS gains, a ~7.2% free cash yield in 2008, and 20%+ ROE on 2007 warrants a premium. Target $52

A very well run trash company. As long as they have a good staff and people make trash, this company will do well
