It's the time of year in which a lot of charity organizations are collecting donations. All of them do good work for a variety of causes. The most common year round and especially in December is poverty and there's a variety of organizations visible in public at this time of year collecting and distributing non perishable and perishable foods, clothing and etc. It's encouraged by organizers to make cash donations in any form of payment because the organizations know what is needed and they can stretch the money further than collecting tangibles. In Canada it's extra encouraging that Canadians get charitable tax credits if they make cash donations to registered charities, giving incentives for Canadians into donating.
During this time of year when celebrating Christmas, Eid al-Fitr, Hannukkah, and etc. Many give extra attention to the less fortunate children by donating unwrapped new toys to charity organizations, because we're reminded to through multimedia. For me I get reminded by radio, television, and ads all around. For the last few years from post 2020 the individual donors has dwindled, but the corporate donors has risen in Metro Vancouver (formerly G.V.R.D. or Greater Vancouver Regional District) where I'm residing. It's not a surprise that the majority of the corporate donors are in businesses associated with real estate in a overheated market in Canada followed closely by Toronto (also called G.T.A. or Greater Toronto Area). When I pass by holiday donations or see them on television it's heavily weighted towards children.
Poverty doesn't discriminate especially any age group, not everyone know there's a large need of gifts for tweens and teens in Metro Vancouver and a lot of kids in this age group are regularly forgotten or may not be made aware of because charities only ask public for unwrapped new toys. Other places in America and Canada have experienced the same problems of this age group being regularly forgotten. Poverty never stays the same and is constantly changing as it's making it difficult for charities to make informed decisions of meeting the less fortunate needs and making suggestions to donors what to donate. Due to the fluid of poverty situations happening in real time, charities don't have the resources that Walmart has in terms of logistics which results charities to operate in misses and hit where a high number of clients needs aren't met. Donating cash simplifies things for charities in purchasing things clients need rather than throwing away unwanted tangibles.
The simplest way is donating cash get the charitable tax credit and pat yourself on the back and feeling the helper's high. The flaw with this method is where will the money go? Will 100% of it go to the intended gift giving? Will it all go to charities operations? or both? We must remind ourselves that nothing is free in America and Canada where charities have expenses they need an office with warehouse space, trucks/vans need fuel with occasional maintenance or repairs, utilities, equipment, salaries to compensate organizers and wages to compensate staff. In Canada donors can get some confidence that cash donations going to charities that are approved by the C.R.A.(Canada Revenue Agency) are issued a registration number, are not subject to paying taxes and can issue tax receipts upon donors request are doing good work.
If donors want to make direct impacts with 100% going to intended clients they should call the charity and ask them or search their websites for what is needed and then buy the item(s) before donating them, that way donors will know exactly where the money went. Equal focus should be placed on the almost forgotten tweens and teens. I know the demographics of this age group from previous years of researching in charity websites. Some examples by Salvation Army in Canada suggestions are, gift cards, gloves, scarves, board games, school supplies, backpacks, sporting goods, hoodies, books, electronics, jewelry, make up kits hair kits, hair dryers, digital music players, curling irons and etc. Now donors need direct objectives, an example is the betterment of American or Canadian societies by donating scientific calculators, graphing calculators, backpacks, school supplies, books, etc. to improve learning education and donating makeup kits, hair kits, hair dryers, curling irons and etc. to empower girls.
In Canada it's suggested to start with 1% of annual employment income, but regular donors go above that and in the end it's what donors are comfortable with. Let's say the donor annual total employment income in Canada for 2022 was $59300.00 CAD and 1% of $59300.00 CAD = $593.00 CAD of donation room for 2023. The joy of donating gifts is shopping for them and for this year on the education side donor may look at Texas Instrument scientific calculators TI30X, TI30Xa, TI-30XIIS(blue), TI-30XIIS(pink) and TI36 X PRO. For the empowering girls side beauty products at international chain Sephora of Canada or Canadian drugstore chains London Drugs, Rexall, and Shoppers Drug Mart. So the donor may buy 6 x TI-30XIIS(pink) @ $21.98 CAD = $131.88 CAD, 6 x TI-30XIIS(blue) @ $22.14 CAD = $132.84 CAD total = $264.72 CAD x applicable taxes 1.12% = $296.49 CAD + (6 x Sephora gift cards @ $50.00 CAD = $300.00). The total donation gift package is $596.49 CAD. Went over by $3.49 CAD but we can now check complete for 12 girls and 6 boys for 2023.
During the time of writing using Google currency converter,in America 1 Chinese Yuan = $0.14 USD and in Canada 1 Chinese Yuan = $0.19 CAD. If 1.3 billion plus Chinese each gave 1 Chinese Yuan that's over $183,823,900.00 USD and over $249,376,400.00 CAD so there is no such thing as too little to donate.
