Clearly some of the obvious reasons from the other postings:

1 - Heading into a recession consumer discretionary will lead the downfall (and we keep hearing we are not in a recession, eh?)

2 - Growth estimates for many of these companies have yet to be revised down. They will miss #'s and guide down.

I wish, however, this was a S&P Consumer Discretionary Short instead of the DOW. The blend is too heavy on Consumer Staples stocks along with Discretionary.

I'm selling off my market short and buying this sector short as over the next two+ months while earnings are reported I think this sector is doomed.

Only torn between this and SFK as I think the high multiple stocks are going to come crashing down (and that is when I begin to pick them up).

Looking for a way to short retailers. Gas will hit 5 bucks/ gallon avg by the end of the year no doubt. Consumers will look to save as much as they can.

I don't feel guilty about liking this. The recession 'chatter' provides a big tailwind here. If you're a big holder of consumer services and want to smooth out some volatilty this is the ticket. Any further credit trouble (i.e., credit card debt) will really spark this nugget. The fact that McD's accepts credit cards is a dark sign.

My rationale here is mostly the same as for SDS. While the subprime mess is rough consumers are really on the front line. People who have lost their homes or even just discovered they have negative equity don't spend as much.
