Scholastic Corp (SCHL)

CAPS Rating:
**

A children's publishing, education and media company, which creates quality educational and entertainment materials and products for use in school and at home, including magazines, children's reference and non-fiction materials, film, videos and toys.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Harry Potter sales is just what Scholastic needs, the Potter series already accounts for a good portion of Scholatic's revenue, with this the final Harry Potter book I expect huge sales and a quick spurt for this company. I hold a current target price of about 40.00 for this stock over the next mon...More

I'm not comfortable with the valuation. I think that there are other companies doing better things in the educational market. And in terms of retail, sorry J.K. but whether or not you kill Harry Potter in the 7th book, the series will be killed and with it Scholastic's golden goose. That's not the w...More

May drag along a little, but then it will jump up because of the new school year.

This is one of my "cyclic" stocks. I don't necessarily by for market, but because of their business cycles. Schools are beginning to put in orders for next year's textbooks, so this will reflect in the next couple of quarters.

Of course, I realize that buying/selling this way assumes that there is nothing wrong with the underlying business, and that economic conditions won't kill the company (or their expected earnings)....meaning "your mileage may vary."

But, without the Potter books, this should be a fairly safe, predictable stock for the next 6-12 months. After that, it's just a matter of what happens with No Child Left Behind.

I think that Scholastic is not doing well but it will do better in the next year because they have good books and we use their magazines in my school.
