Made outperform pick on 09/16/11
So far up 16.69% vs the S&P up 16.84% for a negative score of -0.15% The dividends help.
I still think there may be more upside and hopefully will outpace the S&P

LS Starrett (SCX) makes tools for metalworking companies, aviation, farm equipment shops etc. The stock sells for about 80% of book value. They pay a dividend with a 2% current yield and trade for 12 times earnings.
Recs
L.S. Starrett is a boring little small cap company that manufactures and sells precision tools and measuring instruments and devices which is selling below book value, has very little debt, the officers and directors own a significant amount of the shares with considerable institutional ownership. Starrett’s instruments and devices set the standard for the industry in the USA and the company has been in business for over 120 years. This is a stock to buy if you would not mind owning for several years, no matter what the price does in the short term.
The numbers:
Cash: 32M
Debt: 13.92M
Price/Book: 0.69
Book Value per Share: 28.17
Insider Ownership: 18.4%
Institutional Ownership: 44.8%
This stock will not be a ten-bagger but would be one that Walter Schloss would be interested in.
Recs
Graham and Dodd might not approve, but the company trades at its current assets. So long as the rest of the assets can cover the small amount of debt, the company's break up value is more than its current Market Cap. If the company can return to past profitability than this stock is definitely a value. I do not know anything about SCX's operations but profit seems very likely in the near future
