SGY is an oil & nat gas exploration and production company with operations primarily in the Gulf of Mexico, but some activity in China as well. While energy stocks have been of to the races, including this one (up 80% in the last year) this stock still trades at 8 times current earnings, and 7 times forward while the industry trades at ~24 times current EPS. The stock is a relatively new issue, and I believe it can double again within the next two years.

This energy stock reported for the last three months ending March 31, 2008 it's revenues increased 17% and net income totaled $62.2M which reflects increased earnings from oil and gas production. Right now that oil and gas prices are high priced they should do well.

Stone is a low cost producer of natural gas and oil. Their focus after merger is the gulf of Mexico region. Their current P/E is lower than most of their peers. They should have profit growth both from price and demand and with a P/E of 8.39, they can easily grow 25% from their current price just of P/E.

EPL acquisition of SGY will go through before 12/31/06. EPL is more valuable than the Woodside bid (which requires abandoning the Stone Energy acquisition) and these two companies, SGY and EPL, are head over heels in love with each other.
Recs
Merger will be completed with EPL and result in a nice short term gain.
