Just a lazy short. I see the S&P 500 at 900 in a year's time, so that's 25% - isn't it ?

BUY ProShares Short S&P 500 (SH)

Posted by intelledgement on Fri, 23 Sep 11

We are increasing our short position here as a hedge against the increased risk of a major sovereign debt default—or potentially a series of defaults—in Europe that could negatively impact international banks (in Europe, the Americas, and Asia) and lead to a credit freeze similar to the one we experienced in 2008. As we have in the past, we are going with the Proshares Short S&P 500 (SH) ETF:

http://www.proshares.com/funds/sh.html

…which “seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, that correspond to the inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of the S&P500® Index.”

This ETF has not done a good job of doing the inverse of the S&P 500 & I'm slightly bullish.

I see the S & P sliding, with record levels of corporate debt and declining consumer spending. The rest of the world may be out of recession, but we seem to be stuck in a low gear with few prospects for things improving anytime soon.

The myriad issues currently pressuring world economies increase the probability of a correction (which the market's been awaiting) and make this trade a rational and prudent defensive tactic.

There are a lot of ways to do that, but perhaps the easiest, most straightforward would be with something like the ProShares Short S&P 500 (SH) or UltraShort S&P 500 (SDS) exchange-traded funds.

But for investors ready to take that step and go against the market right now, fresh off a few weeks of nervousness and decline, they'd be making the Stupid Investment of the Week.
