OK, I've finally found an investment where I can put my opinion to work. I think that Treasuries have been overvalued for quite some time. I also agree with those who say that Treasuries are the next bubble. Here's my take: the US government borrows money and issues Treasuries. Right now the US government can borrow money from between 0.07 %(3mo.) and 4.25% (30 yr). The total national debt (not just the current year budget deficit) exceeds $11.8T (of which $7.5T is public debt), or roughly 5X annual tax receipts (3.25X public debt), and approximately 83% of 2008 US GDP of $14.25T. I think that in the near future that buyers of US Treasuries will demand a higher interest rate. If this occurs, then then the price of current and older Treasuries (at lower rates) will fall. It's a pretty simple theory and there are a number of astute investors (Jim Rogers, Jeremy Grantham, Peter Schiff to name three) who believe the same and who are aligning their substantial holdings accordingly.

I am predicting bond will outperfrom equities for the next few years. My reasons are as follows:

The S&P is way overpriced, the P/E ratio is above the historic median.

David Rosenberg points out the S&P has priced in 4% GDP growth for 2010 while the bond market has priced in 2%.

More than 100% of the economic growth we have seen in 2009 has been the result of government spending. This cannot continue forever. If you take away government spending in 2009 real GDP would be down around 6%

While firms have been "beating" earnings estimates those estimated have been DRASTICALLY cut down over the past year.

Lastly if you look at the S&P 500 earnings have been made by cutting costs, as revenue is down. You can only cut costs (lay off people) for so long, eventually you have to sell more.
