Silicon Motion is a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets innovative digital media storage and mobile multimedia solutions for next generation portable consumer devices, such as MP3 player, portable media player, DSCs, mobile phones, PDAs, wireless home media center, and more. Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Taiwan, its core products are flash memory card controller, USB flash disk controllers, low power embedded audio video DSP, and high performance multimedia companion graphics controllers.
A recently published report, with projections of 89% of U.S. households having at least one cell phone and 50% at least one MP3 player in the year 2010 is a promising news for the company. Mobile storage products accounted for more than 80% of Silicon Motion’s sales revenue in the past. Endorsing the same net sales in the recent quarter for mobile storage products was $29 million or 92% of the total with unit shipments growing 104% year on year. This is expected to continue in the future with features such as camera, video and mp3 incorporated into the instrument make it more favorable. As the case of low-density NAND flash memory is concerned, bundling with top five mobile handset original equipment manufacturer holds the key to success.
The major growth driver for 2007 would be its new xD-picture card controller or flash cards for cameras made by Fuji, Olympus, and Kodak. An estimate for xD-picture card market is approximately 60 million units annually and the company has hopes of capturing at least 50% of the same with Samsung base. Moreover the company has qualified for the Microsoft’s Windows Vista logo program with its SM321E and SM324 USB flash disk controllers and is all set to beat the market.
