even if the technology is best, ps3 is THIRD amongst the latest-gen consoles. add the fact that sony is having trouble making an margin on flat-screens in a buyers' market, and you've got trouble. can't just sit on ps2 now!

Blueray is winning the battle - the stock has suffered this year, but it is set to soar along with Blueray and the PS3 (didn't win the console war, but won the medal for "trojan horse of the decade".

The PS3 will begin to trounce the Xbox in the video game industry. With the Wii to me being a different kind of gaming system. You can't really compare the three. The Ref is standing over HD-DVD while it lays on the mat counting to ten. Sony can only benefit.

Sony - Another RSI screener that has crossed the 30 threshold.

Trading near a 52-week low, set to benefit from Blu-Ray and PS3 sales as well as many other diversified products.

One by one, each of sony's products are being beaten by newcomers. RED.com will kill their video business.

In my experience, Sony just doesn't know how to provide customer service.

1) Sony's business plan is finally being realized. 2) The company owns the media that everyone will be using for the next 5 years. 3) Blu-ray adoption will be enormous thanks to HDTV being mandatory in 2009 (which will also sell Sony TVs). 4) VOD will fuel blu-ray recordable disc sales due to a need for inexpensive storage. 5) Blu-ray adoption will fuel PS3 sales and PS3 sales will fuel Blu-ray adoption (and sell Sony TVs) 6) Trading near its 52 week low.

I really hate Sony but their future is bright and hopefully they've learned from their mistakes.

Blu-Ray market share, combine with increasing PS3 sales having the player built in. Microsoft and Apple will probably adopt the standard. Control of movie content and rental business of Blu-Ray discs. License of player product and distribution. Increased gamming software based on increased sale of players.

HD-DVD was delt a death blow, only a matter of time before Blu ray really takes off and Sony's very risky investment starts to pay off. this will keep Sony in the green for years to come. Also makes the PS3 more relavent since the Blu ray player won't become obsolete.

Blue ray is way better, Its holds 25/50 gigs. Why should we accept hd-dvd that only holds 15/35gig and buy a technology thats already maxed out? with blue ray they start at 25 gig and 50 gig for dual layer. Once high def gains momentum sony will take off. At this day and age we will always need more storage space

For short term, this stock will stay low for a very simple reason: yen going up against all currencies due to the yen carry trade reversing. Sony, Toyota, and all these Japan export companies will have some difficult times in the upcoming quarters when they report their earnings in yen. Also, consumer confidence dropping is not helping either. (Oh but if we are comparing this stock with SP500, then I guess this don't matter that much.)

In the long run, Sony has a tremendous future. Gaming is just a part of their business. They can still expand on many other areas and they do have the resources to do so. As the Top Bull Pitch mentioned, the Sony Unified idea is their key to success. Sony can sell TV and other stuff to help PS3 not just in terms of earnings and profits, but also it could work in a functional way. When this works out some how, everything in Sony could become profitable.

But the problem is that Sony has a very bad and traditional management... I think Stringer wants to change this, but I think it might take him years...

Not an important note but perhaps maybe the Olympic might boost up Sony's home electronic sales as the Chinese spends more of their expensive RMB? Hmm... I can also imagine an Olympic game software war between the real-action Wii and the real-graphics PS3 :^P

Growth will slow next year across consumer entertainment lines as consumers cut back on premium brand name items and turn to cheaper models like Visio.

The PS3 will continue to under perform and inventories will increase, crushing margins and dragging the rest of Sony's units down. (In October of this year, the games division alone lost $843 million).

Additionally, the bottom-line effect of the newest PS3 $100 price cut has yet to be seen. The machine has been redesigned to have a reduced bill of materials, which should benefit Sony in the long run, but it is likely still selling it at a loss and we have no idea when they will reduce enough costs to break even. Sony expected to make up hardware losses with software royalties, but so far software sales on the PS3 have been abysmal.

2008 won't be a good year for this company, in my humble opinion.

Sony has been getting killed in the console war, but I think that the PS3 will eventually come out on top once game developers ralize the potential of the machine and learn to code software for it.

More and more games coming out for the PS3, lower prices on the systems, the high failure rate of the X Box 360 and the "geared towards the kiddies" image and different configuration for some games to work on the Wii platform makes SNE look better and better all the time. I think people just needed a little time to warm up to the PS3 and especially with the the holidays coming up, this is sure to perform.

The music and entertainment arm are banking too much on too little. TVs and electronics are a wide-open market and Sony's name is no longer synonymous with quality. And the PS3 speaks for itself.
