It can't get worse for Sony and with HD-DVD dead now, Blu-Ray will be a very vital component in the coming months. Not to mention this year Sony will have games that people will want as "must haves." Did I mention that Microsoft XBOX 360 design is problematic in its failure rate? On a final note, the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player in its price range because of the frequent updates unlike other manufacturers.

I think Sony will enjoy riding the wave of people spending their tax refunds on new tv's. Switching over to digital signalling will also give customers a kick in the butt to get a new flat screen.

They have to respond to the Nintendo Wii which can only mean bigger and better product. They also have a pretty good hold on the digital TV market. They are pioneers in some of the flat screen technology. As long as their Research and Development stays active, they will do well!

Sony will get a boost from the upcoming games for the PS3 and the win over the Blueray vs. HD-DVD war. Another poplular trend has been their unlocked cell phones that people buy to have a better selection of designs compared to their cell service. Sony will do fine this year, however I don't believe it will do better than the S&P.

Sony is being punished for the US bad economy. Some of this is justified but not by the hugh amount it has been. Recent market move to support SONY's format of DVD movies will also help substantially in next 2 years. Buy valued stock now at a good discount.

Disclamer: I do not have a position in this stock.

Now that Toshiba has dropped their HD-DVD format, Sony just has one more premium product to offer, not to mention that it is a product that hasn't even begun to demonstrate its growth potential yet.

Sony products do not try to undercut others on price, which puts them in a good market position since they can continue competing on quality. Avoiding price wars is the best way to stay profitable in this industry. Hopefully consumer spending will start to trend upwards again in the next 1-2 quarters, and then Sony will be poised to reap a good deal of that disposable income. This next couple of months will probably be a bit ugly, though.

Sony weathered the slow adoption of PS3 and Blu Ray, and, being a foreign stock, should outperform US-biased S&P even in recession. But it does not make Sony a good investment in the real world, yet.

OK, it's only rumor from work (though from a tech-geek): it sounds like the only player that can (currently) fully utilize ALL features of the Blu-ray disk is the PS3. All other brands of players cannot access the newest generation of features of the newly crowned future of media. It'll also take a few months for the price of other Blu-ray players to come down, and I want in before the rush.
There are lots of dynamics at play here, (but you didn't need me to tell you that). I'm always surprised at the huge variety within the demographic that calls themselves technologically savvy, and many still want their hard copy discs.

The big win here is the Hi-Def DVD format. This will move Sony forward with not only media but Hi-Def players and DVD drives for PCs. The expectation is that this will not be fully realized for about 2-4 years. Sony's venture in OLED display technology is another step in the right direction as the strive to be the first provider of the Next-Gen flat-panel display. OLED has a way to go before maturity but I believe some, if not most, of the gains from this thriving technology will be realized in 5 years. The only hindrance I see from Sony at this time is their proprietary "Memory Stick" media. I see it as a sore spot that they'd do better without.

Let's see...Wal-Mart is only selling Blue-Ray and Netflix is only selling Blue-Ray. Sony may have a big jump as more and more people jump to the Blue-Ray side of things within the next year. Partner this with Toshiba almost giving up on HD-DVD and you have an outperform.

with that said expect blu-ray to be the future for the next 5 years. expect to see more movies aswell as playes and blu-ray drives at your local electroincs stores. On top of that the digital era is apon us in Feb 09' which mean more TV sales for sony. The company has a large assortment of product and the PS3 for the first time outsold the Xbox ever since its release. Expect more top notch games for the ps3 this upcomming year as well as free internet play is a plus on the PS3 side
