I believe elesclomal's trial results have been very encouraging, especially in light of its mechanism of action. There is much recent evidence for the critical importance of mitochondria in the cancer problem. Elesclomal is thought to work in part by inducing oxidative stress which results in the dysfunction of the electron transport chain and the collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential. As mentioned, there is much evidence that the mitochondria are critically important to many cancers. This trial was in melanoma if I recall, and melanoma is notoriously difficult to treat. Also, my understanding of the scientists involved is that they are very sharp people. SNTA is also working on a drug that is an HSP-90 inhibitor. HSP-90 (one of the family called heat shock proteins) is involved in protein folding and specifically in the proper folding of proteins under cellular stress. I believe this drug could prove to be very useful for treatment of a wide range of cancers. Also they have a fairly recent deal with GSK regarding elesclomal.

Just won orphan status for their already fast tracked melanoma drug. should be interesting to see how this develops.
