10/16/08, 11:00 AM Despite the "life is good, the world is beautiful, it's all good" pronouncements from the company, this whole sector is being pressured by current macro conditions. Eventually they will have to face reality and talk about it. I don't believe that this price can be supported, in spite of the recent fall. Next to newspapers like MNI, companies like SON will have their day in the doghouse.

Sonoco Products Company (Sonoco) is a manufacturer of industrial and consumer packaging products, and a provider of packaging services with 334 locations in 35 countries. The Company operates in four segments: Consumer Packaging, Tubes and Cores/Paper, Packaging Services and All Other Sonoco. In May 2007, the Company completed the purchase of Matrix Packaging, Inc., a manufacturer of custom designed blow molded rigid plastic containers and injected molded products. On October 3, 2007, Sonoco completed the acquisition of the fiber containers and industrial plastic carriers assets of Caraustar Industries, Inc.

Technical Analysis:

Its current price level near 33 has been tested for the past month. This recent test doesn’t look bullish anymore as sellers are beginning to enter the market. I think it is losing its momentum to go up. This is only a short-term underperform pitch.

Sonoco is paying 0.26 declared quarterly dividend in this so called crises,and if it is a crises then they need to tell Sonoco,so they want keep kicking tail in earnings estimates.Last 2 calls 0.8 above consenses estimates,only missing once out of the last 8,and that was just a minor set back due to growth in their packaging services of 324 locations in 35 countries around the globe.Not to mention their growth in the other segments.It sure does look pretty in RED sliding down this market wall headed to the bin basket. Long term players may want to check it out before it tuns back GREEN.

Sonoco is constantly looking for new product lines. I like this company now more than six months ago when it was trading $12-13 higher per share.

Pretty good company in a tough marketplace. Unless they can follow the demand to low-labor-cost countries, they are in a longer-than-most uphill battle for the long haul. They seem too stuck in the West and in the good-old-boy past. Signs of change are few and superficial it seems.
