My pick is that Staples will go up after this recent merger with Office Depot. Note I worked for Staples for 3 years in the past......

1.) While the Office Supplies sector is dying (printers, paper, ink & toner) the copy & print and easy tech businesses are thriving. These departments also have huge margins
2.) The merger will NOT be held up by the FTC because there is almost nothing sold at Staples that you can't buy at competitors (Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, Costco, Target, etc...).
3.) The merger between Staples and Office Depot will allow the two to consolidate costs when it come to purchasing power, warehouses, trucking/shipping, etc...

Staples is downsizing its retail footprint, both through store closures and shrinking the remaining stores to make them more productive. This will yield huge cost savings and represents a much more sustainable business model going forward. Online sales already account for nearly half of Staples' revenue, and this segment of the business will continue to grow.

Until SPLS get's it's distribution to mini & micro businesses (Professionals, Realtors, Doctors offices, etc) competitive with the Amazon UPS alliance it will be relying too much on foot traffic for operating margins.

SPLS is being set up for a potential short if the Aug 21 numbers deviate negatively from analyst predictions, which I believe they will. Retail stores in general are being overtaken by online retailers; this trend is well known, and expected to continue. SPLS is taking steps to expand their online business and reducing losses incurred by low performing stores, but in the short term I believe the stock will fall due to a poorer than anticipated earnings report and not recover for another quarter or two.

Driven to innovate at every level, Staples is poised to compete in the office supply market, even though Amazon has a large market share

Big box store that is losing to online options like Amazon. As the saying goes, trade what you see. I've been to my local stores a few times lately and there is never a large customer presence.

Staples is the best of the last office supply chains, if any of them are going to survive, it's this one. THe only thing that can totally kill it is Amazon free next-day shipping.
