StatoilHydro ASA (ADR) (STO)
An integrated oil and gas company, headquartered in Stavanger, Norway which is based on both production and reserves.
Recs
Statoil is one of the most experienced and successful seekers for new oil deposits at sea. Its being Norwegian doesn't hurt it either; those folks have a reputation for hard work, ingenuity, and good business sense.

As the polar ice caps melt down, guess who's got a direct route over the top of the world to China? It's happening. Really. The race for arctic dominance is on and besides being well positioned, Statoil's ridiculously cheap.

An integrated oil & gas company, based in Stavanger, Norway. Has operations all over the world. Operates on 21 international oil fields around the world and 4 in the Norwegian region. 67% state-owned by Norway, one of the richest nations in the world with zero debt. Yes, you read that right. NO DEBT. And 11% SURPLUS budget every year. This means that this company will never go backrupt. Despite only 4 million inhabitants, Norway is the 10th biggest oil producer and 3rd biggest oil exporter in the world.
StatoilHydro (just Statoil in near future after their name change) is a bold firm with operations in places like the Barents Sea where others do not dear to venture.
Production averages more than 1.7 million barrels/day, proven reserves more than 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent. STO is the world leader in the use of deep water technology.
Not only an oil & gas company, StatoilHydro just built the world's largerst floating wind turbine - yes, you got it: harnessing wind power on the open sea. In addition they are about to venture to design and build a massive wind farm on the Sheringham shore in the UK which, when ready, will produce power for 226k British homes.
Wind farms on the open sea - from an oil & gas company? Somehow I don't really see other oil companies doing this. Backed by the massive oil surplus fund of the Norwegian government, there is nothing stopping this player from conquering the world of oil, gas and wind.
Recs
A politically stable oil source with low risk of disruption. Plus, the primary trend on oil is clearly up. Further, Statoil is undervalued based on its status as largely state-owned.

I am not sure on the timing or catalyst that will send Oil and gas higher and higher. I do feel that it will happen because of limited supply, growing demand and political turmoil in many regions of production.

This company will supply Britian with it's request for it's demand for gas, for the next 10 years or more. The Ormen Lange Project took 10 years and 50 countries. You don't start up something like this and let it fail.

Solid cautious company with
great new prospects.

recent price drop make it attractive; PE of just over 8

International oil and oil will become scare with corresponding upward price trend. It has been beaten down recently and current price is probably near a short term low.

Having held this 1000 sharesstock for about 2 years and nearly lost money on it, I think that the stock markets in the U.S. highly speculative as they are, are not receptive to European government owned companies. The Norwegioans are too damn honest for the U.S. stock market; they report even the most insignificant events which could possibly affect society or the environment. Petrobras does not do that (I held it for two years and sorry that I pulled out prematurely -- since then it has quadrupulled.
Only a very large strike by Statoil would garner it the interest that this market craves; since STO is in the Nowegian Shelf and dependent upon a dwindling supply of Oil and gas, I think it is unlikely that in the next year or so, it can outperform a recumbent market.

Has 2 of my favorite qualities in a stock purchase, foreign and fuel based. Fuel makes the world go around and we should buy it from around the world.

I believe the world is short of energy - cheap oil. There will be dips in the price of oil , but the trend is up, ... all the way UP!

STO is trading at a 60% discount to its intrinsic value. Nice growth ahead...I'm thinking this one will hit triple digits in the future.

Nice stable dividend. Foreign exchange rate. Large cap which should outperform small and mids if we hit a recession.

Will have much oil to drill in the arctic region

Everytime Russia stops gas supply to Europe, this is the company which makes money on it. And the Russians are far from being reliable partners...

This company benefits from high oil prices without incurring the event risk of other major oils since most of its production is in and around Norway. The fact that th Norwegian government owns a substantial fraction insures no hostility from the government.

Statoil (STO) is a Norway based integrated oil and gas company and a leading producer on the Norwegian continental shelf. It is the world’s largest sellers of crude oil and a substantial supplier of natural gas to the European market. The company in the recent years has ventured in new international areas of the Gulf of Mexico, Angola, Azerbaijan, Algeria and Iran. STO is also in talks with PetroChina for deep-water drilling in the South China Sea through production-sharing agreements.
The company has a strong focus on natural gas, which is the new generation fuel. It was short listed as potential partners for Gazprom’s giant Shtokman natural-gas field in Russia. Based on STO’s past performance, the chances of it being selected are high. In the event of the deal materializing it would act as a major boon for the company. The Norwegian government being the majority shareholder is in favor of STO as it is unlikely to be burdened with unfavorable policies.
Visualizing the risk, STO’s presence in politically unstable areas of Algeria, Angola Venezuela and Iran is exposed to greater political risk. Moreover, the Gulf of Mexico assets are largely undeveloped, which is expected pose a problem for the company going ahead. Additionally, the company is a small player as compared to oil giants. It would be difficult for the company to get into large projects without a partner. This would limit its exposure to small projects alone. On the back of company’s strong fundamentals and growth oriented strategies, the stock is expected to march northward going forward.
