Seagate has recently announced the Barracuda XT SATA 6G (SATA-III) hard drive, which, along with their strangle-hold over SAS storage gives them the dominant position over WD in the Enterprise market. They will release an Enterprise-level SSD before the end of 2009, further strengthening their grip on that market segment. Predict outperform in one year.

Seagate's Barracuda drives have been plagued with realiability issues, which is almost like a death sentence in this industry. One of its main competitors, Western Digital, is in a much stronger position. Financials of both companies speak for themselves. I only buy WD drives and they never let me down.

Only so long before businesses have to buy tech again, and Barracuda is a strong competitor.

Recovery in PC & tech stocks and demand for its products will see this highly undervalued stock outperform in the coming future.

I covered this stock as an analyst on Wall Street 20 years ago. If you look at economic recoveries, especially for tech stocks and especially for commodity tech stocks then you'll see that STX can rally by many times where it bottoms out. I'd be in this looking for 4-5x over today's price.

The high debt load makes them vulnerable to WDC and Asian manufacturers. Revenue and margins have started to slip much more at STX than at companies with conservative financials.

P/E is too high and I don't see them going much higher than they are now, but in the not-so-short term I think they'll do just fine. They remain a leader in their field--for now. What worries me is what happens in the next 8-10 years? As flash memory becomes cheaper and cheaper, solid state hard drives will become an irresistible alternative - and suddenly Seagate has the carpet pulled out from under them.

tech's are getting killed right now. I'm long term on seagate. I personally think they are the best HDD company out there. They will be fine.

Continued increases in productivity and product quality at Western Digital will lead to harder times in a market where second best doesn't mean much.
