Have followed this small company for many years from the time its name was Biotech General. It has a gout drug in phase III, planned to conclude in 2007. Excellent chance of success. Turned profitable first time this year with much maneuvering
Has initiated a 10 million share buy back program.

the words "engaged in developmental" mean everything, along with the idea that a larger Pharm. may come along and offer a buy out of this smaller company.

Something must be in the works for this small company to double its stock value.

I'll take a ride on the Reading Railroad, but be careful passing go....

Just a small time country bumpkin here in Seattle that got in over his head stuck holding 3000 shrs of (SVNT) at $16 shr since I bought it in 1996. For the past 3 - 5 yrs the price hasn't risen much higher than $5.

BUTTTTTTTTT, just within the last two months it's doubled and currently trading at $10.75! The only recent public news I've found has been 1) 3rd qtr earnings were up (but not great), 2) drug Puricase® (PEG-uricase)currently in Phase 3 development - gout patients 4) SVNT just did some PR at a "Rodman & Renshaw Eighth Annual Healthcare Conference" and 4) shareholder stock buyback offer (several months ago).

To me none of the above explains the sudden dramatic rise in share price. So, I called SVNT IR. The only other news the IR Rep shared with me is that SVNT "may be a buyout candidate". Again, this to me doesn't explain the sudden increase.

All I want to do is get back what I put into this ($48,750) and get out, but not at a loss (after 10 years!). I would sure appreciate any additional info I may be missing and/or opinions on my continuing to hold SVNT hoping it will reach the $16 shr I paid for it 10 yrs ago.

This is a wondeful biotech play. The company just announced fantastic earnings and will probably shoot up tomorrow. One thing that makes this company so exceptional, is that it is a profitable biotech. Although it was once profitable, and then fell out of profitability for a while, in it now back in the the black. The good news just keeps pouring out of this company. Management, seeing that the stock was undervalued, put in a dutch tender offer where they purchased 16.2% of the shares outstanding for $6.80. The stock keeps hitting one 52 high after another. They just announced a major court victory and they completed the sale of the Rosemont unit which will help them stay focused. This is still a speculative play. The main is risk is that they rely heavily on one drug, Oxandrin, a weight gain drug. This drug has been doing remarkably well of late, shown in the fact that Savient was able to raise prices, lower their expenses, and still increase revenues at a healthy clip this quater. Savient has a drug currently in Phase III trials, Puricase, for the treatment of Gout. Obviously if this drug does not get approved the stock will plummet and if it does the stock will rise handsomely. Kepp an eye out for this. Currently bullish long-term and short-term.

Savient has continued to turn around. Recent buy back this summer was in 6.50 range, stock has blown right past this.

After a disasterous run that almost resulted in the company being acquired, Savient has spent the last few years focusing on bringing promising drugs to market and developing their full market potential. During the last year, Savient sold Rosemont (U.K. oral drug company) and is using the proceeds to agressively buy back shares as well as further develop drugs in the pipeline. It is interesting to note that while the company is buying back shares, insiders are not selling. If the company can execute, the stock has plenty of room to run from these prices.

I like the stock buyback. I have a tough time picking smaller pharms, but the company is betting on a stock price rise.
