This met a high level screen to indicate a sell and strong underperform against its peers (other tickers in its industry). My 1st version of this spreadsheet devles deep into the company's balance sheet and recent income statements, combined with other relevant price data for the company including insider/institutional holdings, short interest, debt levels, etc.
I'm testing capabilities of this 1st version of my automated, valuation spreadsheet matched with my personal criteria and see how it holds up.

SWN is extremely well managed as a natural gas producer. It makes good earnings and maintains an excellent balance sheet.

NG is battered and probably still a falling knife but the distributors would probably be the play here right now for the long haul.

With Nat Gas at $8/MCF (current production cost) it will be worth about $80 a share based on historical P/E and Margins. Good assets and strong management. Great historical returns.

Downside here is that they have been growing production so fast reserve life has been shrinking and now stands at a mediocre 11.2 years. However they have been replacing resources at 400% prior years production so this should not be too much of a problem

When the overly optimistic FOMC says that household spending will be "constrained" by sluggish income growth, ongoing job losses, lower household wealth, and tight credit AND Shanghai stocks hit a seven-week low, then you know this bear market rally is finally over!

The 1929-1930 equity rally (coming out of The Great Depression) lasted 147 days and the market was up 46%. It has been the same amount of time since the March, 2009 low and we are up about the same percentage. It’s déjà vu (paramnesia), so prepare for a drop of about the same percentage (85%).

A strong energy. I like the way they have weathered the recent macro pressures and have a good balance sheet.

One of the best companies in natural gas, an industry that has taken a beating but should rebound somewhat in 2009.

Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, has a lot of her own money invested in natural gas, with a focus of it being used in automobiles. I don't think much of her politics but on this I think she has the right idea. If the Democrats win in November you can count on there being a natural gas push for use in all kinds of vehicles with California being the test bed for CNG fuel stations. Southwestern Energy Company knows CNG inside and out. I believe they will be on the forefront of this transition.

The futures market is a rigged market especially silver, gold, and now I suspect oil will be taken too low. This government action is to help the economy avoid "D". Like silver & gold, a physical shortage will develope to form a price disconnect of physical vs. paper (COMEX) which will wipe out margined players, possibily destroy the COMEX, delay alternative energy developement, but result in explodeing comodity prices & inflation in less than 18 months. I'm not the smart guy but read Ted Butler and think I see the forest thru the trees. When the resources return to bull form soon and more see inflation boom and the dollar die, the S&P will stagnate or drop and SWN and green & junior mining stocks will rocket up.
