I hate the insurance business as a consumer, so maybe the way to play it is, "If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em." This is a fire-and-forget CAPS pick. Outperform.

Antiquated systems, ineffective re-insurance policies for hedging plus exposure to Hurricane Sandy, which has potential of eroding 70% of future earnings.

safe and boring, but its exactly how you become rich...you consistently make more money than you spend and invest the difference...thats what good insurance companies do...and their underwriting discipline is better than most...selling at close to book value and has a decent growing dividend

They are a terrible insurance company that is way behind the times. You can't even get an electronic statement from them. Their technology ineptitude will enable other more "progressive" companies such as progressive, Allstate, State farm, Liberty Mutual, and Geico to really dominate them.

P&C insurance market is currently hardening... yes combined ratios in the in industry have been in 100+ range in recent years, but TRV continues to post solid returns even through the soft market experienced in the past 5-8 years. ROE typically in the mid-teens w/ the exception of 2011. 2011 was not kind to the P&C insurance industry, w/ CAT (catastrophe) losses at record highs.

Look for TRV to emerge as a clear leader as capacity decreases, demand increases, and weaker market share buyers (aka Allied World) are forced out of the market.

Large numbers of claims usually result in an increased demand for insurance which leads to higher premiums which result in higher profits.

A good track record of the management.
Low P/E and P/S.
Although, slightly more expensive than the industry on P/S ratio.
Good balance sheet with debt/equity=0.24
