my large core pick - slow steady climber that typically outperforms the S&P 5-10% - all fundamentals are very average - 1.6% div - has been in trading range $60-65 since May - technically looks ready for a pop up
diversified conglomerate with global exposure - financially sound and should be able to ride out downturn in US market better than most
I like the UTC Power business and their R&D in alternative energy
"United Technologies is a true conglomerate, operating six distinct businesses serving highly engineered industrial and aerospace markets. The aerospace end market represents 36% of sales. Aerospace segments include Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines, Hamilton Sundstrand aerosystems, and Sikorsky helicopters. Otis elevators represents 23% of sales. Carrier heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and refrigeration represents 30%. Fire and security systems rounds out the firm's businesses, constituting 10% of sales."

Well diversified, best of breed, well managed company

Energy, energy, energy - with diversification. UT is a steady climber in the global market (ever been to a city without an Otis elevator?) Their fuel cell business is compelling and the finanicials make it a low risk buy.

UTX is the type of company that commands market respect. Management continues to grow the company at a sustainable pace. This company will benefit from global markets for years to come.

Being misread as a domestic cyclical vulnerbale to the where we are in the business cycle with a slowing economy. In fact, it well diversitifed with a lot of international exposure and therefore able to earn right through an American downturn.
Recs
The best large cap managed company over the past 20 years - look at the earnings and stock price, and they put GE to shame without needing a finance company to make most of its money. R&D and vision count for a great deal in this case. The UTC Power unit is poised for future growth in fuel cells, and the Otis and Carrier units have very strong growth in Asia and developing markets. This is a technology company under the industrial umbrella, much like Honda is in the auotmobile segment.

This stock is not a one trick pony. They have a strong domestic presence, but their track record in a global setting is quite impressive. They get into markets early, plant the seed and the grow the business. They exhibit a patience that provides exceptional returns over a longer term.

High priced but worth it and worthy of the hype. Continued year over year productivity fueled by a culture of genuine continious improvement. It wont stop. Buy on dips under $60
Recs
Buy this company, add to your holdings as often as possible, reinvest the dividends. Keep this stock in your family for generations.

UTX is a multifaceted company. Earnings driven by highly engineered products from jet engines to elevators etc. Strong support from defense expenditures of government. Good growth ahead as earnings not shaped by any one componant of the economy.

Full disclosure - I work for Pratt & Whitney at UTC and see how well this company is run from the inside. It is fairly impressive how good a company can be run if it truly supports the values and standards it communicates.
Now onto the business side...the overall corporation is well managed and the industries that it supports are at a good point in the cycle - JSF demonstrating vertical flight next year, India/China growth, US housing slowing, but not crashing, airline industry generally getting more healthy.
So while this year may not be a breakout year, I feel there are many reasons in the relatively near term that will drive growth. In my mind, most importantly the prospects will drive buyers in the market to see UTC (stock symbol UTX) as a good company to own. When the market perception gets behind the company the stock should charge higher.
Of course the stock currently is treading water and I believe it is due to other areas having more growth in a quickly growing economy. Now that the overall economy is not growing as quickly, quality companies will once again see buyer pick the stock up.
Not everything is rosy, housing could stagnate for years, JSF could get delayed or worse, have its funding cut due to budget overruns, India and China could turn volatile. The management team though has been led by George David and appears poised to continue what he has led in recent years.
As a stock pick, I believe UTX can be a good stable industrial that won't disappoint for investors. I own the stock because I believe it is a leader of the S&P500 and not a laggard.
Recs
With the slowing US economy and the end to war nearing the growth prospects for UTX look gloomy for the next 2-4 years.
I do not see a any growth coming from Carrier, Chubb, Otis, P&W and Sikorsky in the near future.
Recs
Huge increase in military spending for 2008. Regardless of who becomes president, this company will out perform at least over the short term.

Today I'm "buying" megacaps" and companies that will benefit from the continuing global building boom. UTX is a two-fer.
