I don't think most fully understand Visa's business. I read alot of these bear remarks and one of the major things holding this stock down right now is the big misconception that Visa lends out the money on the credit cards but this in untrue. Both Visa and Mastercard are the infrastructure(system) upon which credit cards are used. This is why your Visa cards in your wallet say things like Capital One Visa is a good example. Capital One is the one extending you the line of credit and Captial One bank is the on at risk when you default on payments not Visa. Visa is simply the system Capital One uses, hence every time you make a transaction with that Visa card, guess who makes money...yep Visa. They make thier money every time that card is used, through Merchant fees and even small percentage of ATM fees are paid to them. So, you see as long as you are swiping that Visa card(be it Debit/Check or Credit card) at the ATM, gas station, mall, or wherever instead of cash...Visa is making money. Whether you are a dead beat who pays his credit card bill on time or not, makes no difference because they(Visa) aren't being paid by you, the consumer. They are being paid by the retailers whom they allow to use their system in the form of merchant fees. Once people realize this and see Visa is not waiting on people's payments in this crazy economy, the faster confidence will rise on this stock and it will see the 80's again. They are not a financial stock they just do business with financial institutions but the well being of those financial instutions doesn't determine the well being of this company. As long as people have a Visa card in there wallet and our swiping it, Visa is making money.
People are mad at the institutions that run these lines of credit, not Visa. The financial institutions are the ones with the high APR rates and hidden fees. Visa isn't seeing any of that money. They don't regulate what the institutions whom use their system do. That is why you can have a Visa card with no annual fee and a 9%APR in your wallet and another Visa card in your wallet with a $50 annual fee and 24%APR because Visa doesn't care where the institutions set these at. They just care that you swipe your Visa card. You as a comsumer should know better then to accept cards with annual fees and high APR's but that is another story and my point. These things have nothing to do with Visa.
Anything below the 55.00 mark this IPO opened up to the public at is a steal!

Visa is the leader in its industry and who wouldn't want to buy in to a new ipo company at its beggining. Especially one as established as visa.
Think about this how much would your stock be worth today if you invested when microsoft first became public.

Just initiated an outperform for MA. My thesis for V is virtually the same as MA. V beats MA in operating margin. A spectacular high 40s, and I believe has similar revenue growth prospects, while cutting costs at the same time. The difference is valuation. A forward P/E of ~25 is too much for me. I think this one still hasn't come down to earth.

I keep reading posts from players in MyCAPS that Visa is a credit card company with potentially bad debt exposure from their credit card holders. Visa does not issue credit. They process transactions and information for credit card companys and banks. They themselves are not the issuer of credit. Though their success is tied to the banks and credit issuers they are not underwriting and approving credit for consumers/applicants.

no collection risk as opposed to card issuers

Who doesn't have a Visa card in their wallet. Or a Visa debit card. Sure they will slow with the ongoing recession, but unless people stop spending money altogether, and we all shrivel up and die, Visa will be their to take their cut. Cash is dead. Long live cash.

WINNER I am happy to own this personnally and I do at 45 I felt it was cheap. In any case I will buy more on weakness and start adding to my position the more the market stabilizes. I don't see that happening in the near term but in any case V is a winner

Should have shorted this pig long ago. The unemployed run up credit card bills; they just don't pay them. Goodbye Visa. Look for a slight rebound up to the low fifties followed by a request for TARP 3 money in Fall 2009. Yes, TARP 3. It will have a different name, perhaps KMPD. "Kickbacks for Major Political Donors".
The people using Visas now are those that have no intention of ever paying their balances. Look at that P/E. Ludicrous.

Globalization still just beginning. People in other countries will not cut up their Visa cards because they are a status symbol, they make life easier, and in general they are not as bad as Americans about going into debt. Near its all-time low, this is a bargain.
