When the market does well, small caps do even better. Of course they crash harder too, so a bull pitch here also means a bull pitch for the market.

Vanguard started offering this about 6 years ago as an ETF version of its Small Cap mutual fund (NAESX - which I am invested in through a 401k). Vanguard has a great reputation for offering attractive funds and ETF's with some of the lowest management costs and fees. This is a great ETF/fund to include in a 401k portfolio that will add a comfortable dose of risk with potential for good growth in the long term.

If you're looking for a way to get into small caps but are concerned about the risks and volatility of small cap stocks, this is a good way to diversify a portfolio and spread the risk out. The chart of this small cap ETF looks impressive when compared to the S&P 500

When the overly optimistic FOMC says that household spending will be "constrained" by sluggish income growth, ongoing job losses, lower household wealth, and tight credit AND Shanghai stocks hit a seven-week low, then you know this bear market rally is finally over!

QUICK! Pick a reason to exit a market that has risen too fast and gotten too expensive. Here are three to choose from: buying power is getting exhausted according to DeMark indicators; daily sentiment indicators are 88% bullish; RSI’s and oscillators are over extended.

Coming out of the current economic doldrums small cap companys should bloom first. the question is when will the market turn around?

I choose a two year time frame. A up turn and recovery starting in the middle of 2009 and a decent increase in the speed of renewed growth by the end of 2010.

And as always its a Vanguard ETF so the cost is right. Buy and homework core pick as a counter to a large cap holding such as MGC.

We're in(or close to) the part of the economic cycle where small cap and growth tend to outperform. Even with large fluctuations over many cycles the overall return of small cap is greater on average. So if my timing is good, the chances are great that this pick will be a good long term play.

Small caps traditionally outperform large caps. These have lagged for some time. It's time for them to move next.

Nice simple, straight forward small/medium cap low cost ETF; post the boon from the Fed (.5% cut in interest) some of these smaller players should come back into play for acquisition.

When the large cap bull run gets tired, small caps will dominate. In the meantime, it trades in tandem with the S&P.
