My thought on sector selection is to simply invest in where you pay your bills: utilities, consumer staples, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and defense (you pay taxes, don't you?).

I believe when a stock goes down just like the index it stays down with the index but it does not rise immediately with the index. S&P will be stable at least for few days but VOX will fall.

Telecom will always be a relevant sector. In many ways, it can be considered a play in consumer staples.
