LOOZA! Verizon stock has been performing poorly, but introduction of the new FiOS cable TV and Internet system is picking up strength, and cell phone sales are strong. Short sell this one in a down market, or trade up on bullish rallys. Price revolving around the 29-32 range without much action. Mid-large market cap.

Once people realize it's potential it's going to skyrocket.

Mmm...wireless communications...

The best wireless network and you get paid over 6% to buy and hold it. It just seems like eventually something good could happen here.

Deals with Google and Palm to bring the Motorola Droid and the Palm Pre into the fold will help bolster sales and finally give them something to compete with the AT&T and the iPhone. Those new releases, coupled with the 6.5% dividend and the fact that it's trading near its lows would indicate to me that it's got good upside potential over the next year.

healthy dividend, strong demand for services mainly among younger population willing to pay for these services.

Where to put your money with CD rated so low? VZ is selling at a discount to market while providing 6.5% dividends... possible 5-20% appreciation, depending on the economy... what's not to like?

I like telecome recently, love wireless providers, and VZ has been spending tons of money building out their business services infrastructure (world wide under sea network), which will position them ahead of competitors when the economy stabilizes. VZ wireless has the best network in the country and will dominate even more when iphone exclusivity with ATT is over. Nice dividend to boot....CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!

Get in now. The technical indicators are showing that it's oversold. They are the best telecom company out there. They are getting new products to compete with the iPhone and the iPhone exclusivity with AT&T won'y last forever. Huge dividend. Sprint is falling apart. I feel like there are huge growth opportunities for this company in the most saturated industry in the US. You get the best company with a chance to raid their competition's business a couple of times over the next few years. In 5 years they may be the undisputed king of telecom in the US.

Reeeeeeeeaady to get back on board. Gave this the big thumbs-down for recovery time (last six months, in case you missed it). Now with a perhaps over-inflated market, it's time to draw on those solid utilities with special dividends, especially during the pullback that, as usual, won't actually come until the wonks decide we've avoided it. Yay rampant optimism! Hurray cash cows!

I am going to do a cross sectional analysis of Verizon and AT&T and determine which stock has the most upside potential based on valuation ratios, intrinsic value and future outlook….

Under valued at this price. But the company has heavy debt. Over the last 10 years they have been able to manage that debt so I say it should outperform.

This company puts in work. Latest ad? Genius. SG&A can take up as much as a % of sales as it wants ;)

Recently I've been battling the decision of choosing to purchase Verizon or AT&T. Both are very strong players in the telecommunications field, both offer significant dividends, and they both appear to be a defensive play towards an uncertain future.
Overall, I feel that Verizon would be a better long term pick for several reasons. First, I'll compare the most significant ratios:
Vz:
P/E Ratio (TTM) 13.65
Price to Sales (TTM) 0.80
Price to Book (MRQ) 1.93
Quick ratio: .71
T:
P/E Ratio (TTM) 12.87
Price to Sales (TTM) 1.24
Price to Book (MRQ) 1.56
Quick ratio: .74
Both of the companies are in the same ballpark as far as revenue growth and accumulation of retained earnings. They both have a lot to offer consumers, so why pick Verizon over AT&T? Although Verizon's P/e is slightly higher than AT&T, its P/S is reasonably lower, which helps to indicate that Verizon may be currently undervalued.
Next, it comes down to battle of the dividends. Both companies have pretty sexy cash flow statements in the terms of dividend payouts.
I'm picking Verizon over AT&T based off of its slightly higher dividend and the possibility that its undervalued. Also, from a speculative standpoint, I do believe that the i-phone has drastically helped AT&T, and that Verizon has shown steady growth without the addition of such a trendy smart-phone. Verizon's stock price might not sky rocket in the next few years, but it represents a solid defensive play with a dividend that looks steady. Verizon might not make me rich, but I'll certainly be buying some fine cigars down the line courtesy of their dividend.
