Great company terrible environment. Gas prices will stay low for several more months at least. Find an oil producer.

Recent deal with Devon give expanded opportunities in shale play. Strong basics in oil and gas industry. Tends to stay out of high risk drilling plays.

Natural gas produces half of the carbon dioxide foot print for the same amount energy, when compared to coal, since it contains hydrogen besides carbon. I believe the US will be adding and/or switching over to using more natural gas to produce electricity. Especially as the antiquated power grid is updated across the country, which is part of Obama's plan.

The price of oil and gas are inelastic. A small drop in demand caused a large drop in price. The intrinsic surplus of demand over supply hasn't changed. This stock will rebound after the panic stops. People who fled the market in fear of losing money on the way down will flock back to the market for fear of missing gains on the way up.

Oil prices are up about 30% from a year ago, yet XEC is up only 10%. And its production over the last year has increased over 10%. Basically it's getting no credit for rising oil prices, which makes no sense.

Did I mention the trailing PE of 6? Unless you think oil prices are heading for $50 or less, this is a buy.

This US oil and gas exploration co. is small and had a great run up recently and has projected to keep it up a while. I hope they are right as the price dropped after I bought in and I am hanging on as prices ran up so fast then down so fast in the price of commodities oil and gas that the exploration companies weren't counting on those huge prices anyway. So they were trounced for nothing if we can use US resources and buy less Arab oil. I have no idea whether we have some stupid committment to buy a certain amount from OPEC. If so I shall sit on my stocks a long while to go up after the recession. Ultimately the price of oil and gas will only go up.

Strong energy play with lots of room to grow, so long as the company manages risks aggressively.

Yes, insiders are cashing out some holdings, but probably only to capitalize on current share price. The price of oil certainly is not going back below $100, but stock prices do not always reflect current and future prospects - take profits while profit can be made. Otherwise, hang on for the ride!

Outperform 3Y.

Reuters, 09 July 2008 --------

"During the quarter that closed June 30, crude oil futures climbed nearly 40 percent, while natural gas futures rose nearly 30 percent. Those gains helped to fatten energy companies' bottom lines.

""Higher oil prices have led to higher earnings for many companies," Tim Gaumer, director of fundamental research for StarMine in San Francisco, said. "For the current quarter, I see positive earnings revisions in only one sector, and that's energy.""

I'm adding a large basket of E&P and supermajors, because I think that there's a good chance oil will break $150 over the summer.

Value pick

Cimarex Energy is increasing oil and gas production at the same time that crude is hitting record prices, a bullish combination for an exploration company. The company has surprised on estimates the last four quarters by an average of 17.89%. Even with the stock soaring, Cimarex still trades with a forward P/E of only 10.82.

As happened in the first quarter as oil and gas prices rose sharply, the brokerage analysts have been scrambling to raise estimates for the second quarter and the full year.

In the last month, second quarter consensus estimates rose by 18 cents to $1.81 from $1.63. For the full year, estimates are up 6% in the last 30 days to $6.81 from $6.40 per share.

Despite the stock trading near 52-week highs, Cimarex still has attractive value characteristics. Its forward P/E is still only 10.82. XEC's price-to-book is 1.69, under the industry average of 2.76.

The company has an excellent five year average return on equity (ROE) of 16.48%. As an added bonus, Cimarex has a dividend yield of 0.40%.
