Let's face it, the economy can tank, gas prices can soar, and Wal-mart will continue to make money. Wal-mart is the first place that the people making cutbacks will spend their money.

The balance sheet looks suspect, with long-term debt growing on a year-over-year basis. Their current ratio is not good, especially for a company this size. In fact, for a company that is making as much money as they are, the ratios are cause for concern.

I am recommending the sell of the retailing sector. Why? The reason is simple, no one is buying anything right now. When was the last time you heard of a friend, neighbor, or colleague bought a new car? I tell you that it is obvious all over America (if not the world) put discretionary spending on perma hold a couple of weeks ago. You can rest assured that there isn't a retailer in America (even Walmart) that will have a great quarter.

Ever since Bush went on prime time consequences..... the retail market has come to a screeching halt that is only slightly less frozen than the credit markets.

Unfortunately, I don't see a quick fix to the credit markets and it certainly isn't going to be forgotten by the Campaign until after November at the earliest. My guess is the economy is going to be in a negative spotlight for a year or more.

Why would you buy the retailers? I say sell baby sell.

WalMart prices will keep the customers coming in, regardless of negative press. Until US citizens are willing (and able) to demand american-made goods, this department store will continue to top the market.

In a tough economy, people bargain shop and Wal-Mart continues to be one of the best places for that. I think we will see Wal-Mart earnings growth fueled by food and bulk puchase sales to consumers trying to save every penny they can.

In addition, they have low debt ratios and a P/E of 16 is very favorable.

Low Price Leader. When times are rough, this is an easy pick.
