Debt Free Companies

March 31, 2016 – Comments (1) | RELATED TICKERS: AAPL , FRX , TXN

I grew up as the child of self-employed parents. A lesson I learned early on is that debt certainly has a use in business, but if not handled carefully and properly, it can eat a business alive. It's tough to use borrowed money to earn a higher return than the interest rate that you're paying, which should limit the use of debt. However, tons of companies convince themselves that it's worthwhile to take on debt to fund new ventures or other corporate initiatives. The size and demand in the corporate bond market serves as evidence. Based on this thought exercise, I posited that debt free companies would outperform the broader market over a period of a few years. Because I have more ideas than money, I used a watchlist to track 13 stocks that had very little or no debt starting on July 29, 2010 versus the S&P 500, estimating that they would crush the return of the index over whatever time period I chose. The results are below.  [more]

I'm afraid of my results this week as this was exactly the type of market that I need to outperform.  So far, I have reasonable confidence that my strategy works in bull markets.  I'd like more evidence to support that but the preliminary results look good.  I have reasonable confidence that I do well in sideways markets as well.  I have no idea what I might do in a sustained market pullback/recession/etc.  The more down weeks I get under my belt the more data I'll get.  Hopefully my strategy still works, otherwise it may force me to rethink what I'm doing, or at minimum, develop a strategy for downtrending markets.  This week the S&P rang in a loss of 1.84%.  [more]

Most of the interest this week comes in sectors related to housing and construction.  Construction and engineering, construction and farm machinery, and heavy trucks both have nice sideways patterns that are primed for some manner of move, be it up or down.  [more]
